Default How to prevent winch wire from bunching up on one side

Hi Guys,

I have a Trailex 8045 and a Warn 3700 winch. When I pull my car up the trailer, I have a real problem with all of the metal winch wire coiling up on the side where my tow hook is. Eventually the wire will rub on the guards. I've been grabbing the winch wire with my hand and pulling it toward the center of the winch, but that's dangerous and also causes me to start and stop the winch every 2-3 feet.

Any help would be appreciated!

Default How to prevent winch wire from bunching up on one side

I guide it back and forth by hand (with gloves on). Can only go couple feet at a time

If you can, angle your winch a little toward the tow hook side. It still might not wind perfectly but it will help.

Put on a heavy leather glove and guide the cable with your hand. Guide it about 3-4 feet from winch.

Winch fairleads are wotrhless. So I use another hand winch aka "comealong." I let the winch rope guide through one of the eyehooks. The other hook is anchored to a point on the trailer so the comealong is 90 degrees to the winch rope. I tighten or release the comealong and guide the rope onto the winch even as I can as i bring up the car.

Is your winch centered on the trailer? I offset mine to the passenger side since all my vehicles' tow hooks are on the side. Fixed that.

Good idea - do you put a pulley on one the wire side of the come-along or do you just let the wire rope slide through the hook?

The Trailex is very compact and the winch will really only fit in the center.

This works. It's how I do it.

I have a Superwinch and it seems to do a good job of spooling on and off. Every once in a while I have to guide it.

Rope is way better to work with than wire. However you will still need to guide the rope as it spools.
