Looking at the 944 Cup rules PDF....

How will the differences in the rules be handled?

Glancing through PCA appears to more strict in a few areas.

I'm in the midst of building my first SP-1 -- so I'm most familiar with the PCA rules.

Lots of SP-1 restrictions on engine modifications are legal in 944Cup. CrankScraper, valve springs, flywheel, coil, "blue-printing and lightening"
come to mind.

Suspension, wheels, and tires also differ.

It'll be academic for me (I'm new to SP1) -- but in mixed class racing -- how will parity be controlled?

Mike
The 944 Cup rules and the PCA SP 944 rules are written with the intention to include the same requirements, though they appear different in some regards. To simplfy for 2016, the 944 Cup rules will be dropped and replaced with the PCA sp1,2 and 3 rules for the series.

Now sp1 is more restrictive than sp2, even though both classes include basically the same models. Why is there even 2 different classes for the same models, this requires a somewhat lengthy explanation that goes back to the beginning of the 944 classes. Safe to say, with there being separate championships for sp 1 and sp2, parity between the classes is not an issue.

John:

Cars currently racing in PCA SP1, 2 and 3 classes are all eligible to race in the 944 Cup series being offered by PCA. An Appendix to the PCA rule book will be added for 2016 to include the rules for competing in the 944 Cup series. The basic rules for the 944 Cup championships are described below and can be currently found on the www.44cup.com

The 2016 schedule for the 944 Cup is a work in progress as we will add PCA races to the 944 Cup schedule as approved for the PCA schedule. The sites for the Nationals are still being worked out.

West Nationals will take place at a track within the West and Southwest chapters. East Nationals taking place at a track from the North, South or Midwest. A driver from anywhere in the country will be invited to race in either or both of the East and West Nationals, a driver is not limited to one or the other based on their home base.

National Championship Format
The 944 Cup National Championship consists of a one race head to head event to determine the National Champion in each of the 3 classes. Racers must participate in at least one (1) regional event prior to Nationals and display a 944 Cup windshield banner to be eligible to win a PCA 944 Cup National Championship title, trophies and prizes.

Any PCA licensed 944 racer will be permitted to register and race for the National Championship race and weekend regardless of the number of 944 Cup races attended during the season. Reigning and former National and Regional 944 Cup Champions are eligible to become National Champion regardless of the number of 944 Cup races during the current year, that is they are grandfather in by virtue of their past accomplishments in the series.

First place driver of the last race on Nationals Championship Sunday determines the National Champion for each of the 3 Cup classes. The two Saturday races at Nationals will also count as double points races towards regional championships.

Regional Championships
Drivers in good standing who have raced at least haIf the available races in a chapter during a championship season, are eligible for regional championships titles and trophies. DNS and DNF races do count towards the required number of races to qualify for a regional championship. DNF races do count in the points standings. No points are awarded for DQ races and do not count towards the required number of races for regional championships.. Points are assigned per the Cup rules as can be seen on the Cup web pages, for example: http://www.44cup.com/north-standings-2014

Thanks Clark and Linda. Apex Performance was there for the series in the early years when the times were most challenging. We will always you owe for that support.

If you are looking to be a part of the upcoming 2016 944 Cup Championships brought to you by PCA, very affordable and well prepared cars are available for purchase and ready to race. Hard to beat these prices for racing a Porsche in a very large and competitive field:

Thanks

Required in 2016 for SP1, SP2 and SP3 is a 944 Cup windshield banner which becomes a quickly recognizable class identifier.

Banners will be available track side at Sebring for the first club race of the 2016 season. Email decals944cup@aol.com to obtain a banner in advance of the season opener.

In 2016, JX2 Performance Group is offering Pirelli track tire contingency program for the 944 Cup classes: SP 2 and 3:

Where 5 or more cars start a race in a given class, JX2 will provide contingency in the following amounts:
$250 JX2 Gift Certificate – 1st Place
$150 JX2 Gift Certificate – 2nd Place
$50 JX2 Gift Certificate – 3rd Place

Where 3 or 4 cars start a race in a given class, JX2 will provide contingency in the following amounts:
$250 JX2 Gift Certificate – 1st Place
$150 JX2 Gift Certificate – 2nd Place

Racers will be eligible for contingency when they place as outlined above while competing on Pirelli tires, fill out a JX2 Contingency Form and provide proof of purchase from JX2.

Once submitted by the racer, JX2 will verify race results with the series after the event. All contingency claims must be submitted no later than 30 days from the event. Contingency certificates will be distributed within 60 days of claim receipt.

Dave, (posted this on the 944 cup FB page as well) can you clarify this... The 2016 rules still state for SP3 "any DOT approved tire", so does that leave just the "Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R" and NOT the "Pirelli P Zero Slicks"?

Slicks are not legal for the 944 Cup classes.

Good question JoshuaB, I was wondering the same thing. So, looks like I will stay with my Hankooks.

Default Ordering Banners

FYI: https://www.pca.org/sites/default/fi...der%20Form.pdf

A supply of banners will be on hand at Sebring for purchase, along with CR logos to be added to Cup banners already on cars.
