Not sure they are the right questions looking at that data set. To me the right question is, where do the drivers of SPB, SP1,2,3 go next? As great starter classes for racers, the next jump out of these classes isn't clear. By adding SPC you have a way for racers to 'move up' to the same but more style of class. Way better than a SPB driver making the jump the GTC3 or 4 because that's the next 'spec' class further up the tree.

Look at the historical's on those classes. Participation has been sliding for years.

Interesting to note - I went on to Rennpoints and found the following individual driver participation for each class this past year:

SPB - boatload
SP1, SP2, and SP3 - boatload
SP911 - 15
SP996 - 14
H - 29
I - 14

I don't think the SP911 and SP996 ever lived up to expectations. G series 911's are almost always D or E cars. 996's start in I and end up all the way into the gt classes.

Default Spec Cayman

I believe that by having SPEC classes the future of Club racing will be better, Too many classes, fragments the racing on track, one or two cars in class is not Fun. Although there should be a place for all Porsche cars to race. With Porsche having less types of cars , the older cars car becoming less raced, aging of the cars, racers getting older, more and more newer models being raced, long range planning needs to looked at. Example, After market and Porsche are starting discontinue parts, 944t throttle switches Bosch has dropped it,Porsche has no ETA when any will be available.

Planning for the future is needed.

No kidding. Had dinner last night with a couple guys who were really interested in the Gt4 Cup. Now that the price has gone up from initial reasonable projections... let's just say our collective enthusiasm has cooled. Plus, IMHO, if you buy one of those you better also buy a spare tub.

Looking for a SPC donor car starting Monday....

Agreed went from G to SP3 this year because of increased field size, we have a 06 Cayman S my better half tracks. But I can tell you any further mod's I do will conform to the new SPC rules. Will watch to see how big the fields are next year but I will be there in a year or two.

Why not spec996? Why hasn't there been any significant enthusiasm over that spec class? Donors are cheap and plentiful.

I know for me, I wanted to stay mid engined. I had actually thought I would get a GT4 Clubsport, but as other have said, the cost of it changed that. I DE a heavily modified 996 GT3 so for me I scratch that itch with it I guess. That and if I go with a 911 based race car it will be a cup car of some kind.

But this thinking might be just unique to me

We just picked up a Boxster to start a SPB build. Also expecting a Cayman in soon for a SPC build. Anybody in the Atlanta area looking for a build, we can help get donor cars, cages, parts, etc.

Are you referring to the folks for whom winning in SPB becomes just too easy and boring? For the rest, the next step should probably be figuring out a way to move up the field, but that's me.

Regarding costs, spec or no spec, you increase HP + tire grip + speed (on a 3000lb car) and costs will increase. Not an accident that GTB1 costs converge with Cup car costs as their speeds converge. There's no free lunch in physics.
