The other complicating factor is that I want a room for toy storage underneath the slab on the lake side (jet ski, tubes, water skis etc.) That may be one of the things that affects cost the most but if I don't do it all the toys will end up in my shop.

And don't forget lighting.... as much natural light as possible and then my direction to my builder was "I want to need sunglasses when the lights go on at night". And are you going to paint in there? Compressor piping, 220 for a MIG or TIG? Outlets for air and power, 25' Welding power extension for flexibility..

I would recommend you also go and play with Google SketchUp, to mock up your space, they have lifts, shelving, trailers, cars, etc you can insert into your place to just see how you might fit things in. You can also see what it might look like if you swap the sides the doors are on.

Plan on/ budget for lots of storage. The biggest difference between nice looking garages and a total mess is storage. It stinks to spend money on it, but it's worth it in the long run.
Also plan on your floor coating so it can be done when the concrete is fresh.

Think "Bada Bing", Brass Pole.
Many offer some nice looking releasable priced barns.

I just built this. It's 26X40 with 12X20 garage doors. I went with a single large door at both ends rather than two doors each end to make pulling the trailer in and out easier. I have a 24ft trailer. The trailer itself with tongue is about 30'. When you plan, keep in mind how wide the side door of the trailer is likely to swing.

It's been over a year but I finally got some preliminary drawings for my shop. Lots of work still to do but I can see already that it needs to be deeper then the 41' he drew and wider then 40'. I think he gets the purpose though. Feel free to suggest modifications or additions, but it will be easier once we get to the next level of detail.
