Default Anyone tow an enclosed trailex with a rented full size SUV?

Going to pick up my enclosed trailex next week.

Problem is the trailer is 700 miles away (Boston-VIR) so I was thinking on flying in to Railegh/Durham rent a full size SUV and drive the trailer back (dropping SUV at Boston airport)

Anyone done that before with a rental tow vehicle? Any advice?

you could try uship and compare price of rental/flight to having someone else tow it. It was about $800 to get mine from Arizona to Texas.

The biggest issue I've run into with rental SUVs is that while they sometimes have hitches, they rarely have electrical hook ups. (And using one to tow with is almost always specifically prohibited in their rules).

But you can easily rent a U Haul Pick up - and these are already setup with everything you need. I would pickup a four flat to six round electrical harness though, since you'll likely need that to have lights.

(I tow with a British truck that's not exactly reliable so I've had to deal with finding a row vehicle on short order a lot in the past).

Paolo, I think UShip might be a good alternative to the flight and truck rental.

Does the SUV you are renting have a brake controller?? While I don't believe it is essential to have one when towing an unloaded Trailex enclosed, it would be preferred.

Paola, congrats on your new trailer. You are going to love it.
But unless you need a road trip or want to see the trailer before taking possession, why incur the time, expense, and unknowns of the trip? Save some money and some time by having it delivered. Then you can have your local trailer shop service it at your convenience.
I'd be very reluctant to haul a used trailer I just bought 700 miles with a tow vehicle I don't know.
Hope this helps.

I'll pick it up for you and deliver it as my schedule permits sometime over the next few years. Let me know.

U-Haul hitch ***** are not standard sizes.

Some of U-Haul's newer small moving vans have 2inch box hitch receivers (offset from center line) in addition to bumper hitch w/ welded ball, but can't reserve one that way, luck of the draw. YMWV

Their hitch ***** are welded on for good reason.

Penske will not allow towing of non Penske trailers.

Went thru this all a few years back when I had to move my trailex from TX to OH. All in, u-ships was the most cost effective and I went with that.

Thank you all for the informative responses (except DTMiller )!
I have decided after your advice, to go the u-ship route which is going to not only save me time and money, but also aggravation.

A special thanks to Frank 993 C4S who found the trailer at VIR, informed me about it inspected it for me and send me pics of it while he was participating to an event at VIR! I have never met Frank, but I am positive he his a true gentleman!

THANK YOU FRANK & ALL THOSE OF YOU THAT RESPONDED, I TRULY
APPRECIATE YOUR INPUT! 👍
