Default AIM Solo DL mount WITHOUT suction cup

Lone Star Region PCA just banned all suction cups for everything. Who can show me how they mounted a Solo DL in a 997 GT3 with no suction cup and no drilling for the 2 screws?

I don't have a pic, but I've you can use 3M aircraft grade hook-and-loop fasteners (aka velcro) and mount it to the dash panel just above your right knee. It will receive a signal just fine there, but visibility while driving isn't great (not that your eyes should be there anyway).

Mount one side of the tape to AIM's metal plate and the other to the dash. The magnets in the AIM Solo will let you take it on and off.

The adhesive will stay until you take it off, and it will come off cleanly.

The stuff is available at Radio Shack.

LSR just sent out a reprieve for this coming weekend, so at least you have some time to figure it out.

I can understand why they are doing it. A suction cup is solid, until the glass breaks and the attachment becomes debris flying around the cabin if one has a really bad day.

I will have to completely re-install my vbox, and spend about $250 on cable extenders, cage mounts, a narrow FOV lens, and a mount for the display.

Solo is pretty heavy, I found a few options:

Sturdy Plastic:

Metal (but need to take dash apart):
Amazon.com: Porsche 911 (997's only) 05 10, Boxster 05 12, Cayman 06-12, Club Coupe 06, 911 GT2 & Gt3 2011, 911 Targa 08 11, (75132105): Cell Phones & Accessories Amazon.com: Porsche 911 (997's only) 05 10, Boxster 05 12, Cayman 06-12, Club Coupe 06, 911 GT2 & Gt3 2011, 911 Targa 08 11, (75132105): Cell Phones & Accessories

For VBox OLED display I went with (though much worse than a suction mount):

If I roll my car and break my glass, I imagine I have a lot bigger concerns than a smartphone flying around.

This must apply to only DE's, correct?

I say this because I thought that the PCA Club Racing rules are set at the national level and any changes have to go through the submission, review, comments, and final approval process before a change can be made.

With that being said, interesting that you could use a suction cup mount in a PCA wheel-to-wheel race but not in a DE.

Yes. DE's. Are they allowed in club racing?

I'm a huge fan of velcro. The squares from 3M are impressively strong and fit nicely on the back of Solo, Gdash and Mychron dashes. Tough part is finding a good spot to use that can see enough sky consistently for the Solos. My video in the Smartycam thread shows that I didn't have that and ended up duct taping it to the dash for the quick fix though.

I'm thinking outside the box. If u got trackmats(metal) I probably bolt a metal aluminum pole that is tall enuf and mount solo dl facing you. That thing ain't going anywhere. Sucks with the suction cup thing. Will they ban go pros too if it already hasnt? Lame. Mike
