Yeah its nuts, they have been making this seat for what a decade?

I don't run one anymore, but am concerned this will effect their other model lines, and feel bad for guys who just bought a set of these

FIA seats are good for 5 years. After 5 years you can continue to use them but a seat back brace becomes mandatory.

I'm not sure I know many serious racers that use a pole position anyhow. While it's a fixed bucket it's not the best dedicated race seat. It's a good seat to bridge the gap between stock seats and full blown race seats hence the reason it's the same lower shell as the factory Porsche 996 and 997.1 GT3 seats.

The real bummer in the whole deal is FIA certified seats command a premium price in the market because you are supposed to be buying peace of mind that it has passed stringent crash test standards and will protect you in the event of an incident.

Without the cert it's no better in theory than buying a replica seat at a fraction of the price...in practice I'm sure Recaro still makes a better seat but you can see my point.

Recaro has made a huge fumble here. Other manufacturers like Racetech, OMP Cobra and Sparco will pounce on the opportunity to fill this void.

Between the pca slider rule and now this, I think I have been racing a death trap.
Lots of work to do this winter.

The SCCA does not require seat back braces for FIA standard seats after 5-yrs. No mention of an expiration for them either. If the FIA seat was designed and test with seat back braces, than it is required; e.g. Racetech.

There has been a lot of debate over requiring a seat back brace for compsite seats that were not tested nor designed for them. I think the SCCA got this one right.

Google "PCA Racing seat slider rule" and you'll see it.

From what I have read so far, several aspects of this situation are unclear. I have not read about FIA processes... perhaps some or all of the information is in the public domain and accessible via their web site.

For example, if Recaro has been making this seat for years, and originally went through a process mandated by FIA, why now would there be change?

One scenario is that original and/or additional FIA certification processes were based on a small (perhaps unrepresentative) sample of test data or perhaps in the latter case based upon engineering analysis sans testing. Or perhaps there were changes to manufacturing processes and/or materials which yielded unanticipated test results.

There are many possibilities.

Recaro has been at this for a while, and I suspect that there will be further clarifying information for customers and dealers.

Hopefully if that happens, communication will be clear and customer and dealer concerns and inconveniences will be addressed.

And hopefully relevant details will be shared in these forums and others without important information being "lost in translation."

And by the way, for those interested, PCA Club Racing has some additional information/perspective on seat sliders in one of the Club Racing News newsletters.

PCA Club Racing does have a process for gathering perspective and feedback on proposed rules, and hopefully folks use that process, and if so recognize that sometimes the officials may not side with their opinions, perspectives and/or recommendations.
