Ouch, good runoff and a nice cushy barrier for him though.

That's gonna be a huge check to COTA, but one he's probably thankful to be able to write.

The hatch opened up before impact. Aside from that, it should buff right out

Fast track exit without a doubt.

Do you think that this was a calculated partial turn to present the passenger side to the impact barrier?

Not enough engine braking.

I had that happen at Laguna, but that's only 130..... this looks like a lot faster.
what was that puff of smoke when he was starting to swerve? stuck throttle?

In all seriousness... what has to happen in the braking system for it to fail like that? Even when you boil the brake fluid you usually get some gradual fall off before they go completely soft. As bad as it looked, that could have been worse if he hit at a different angle. Those cars are moving at the end of that long straight!

A blown brake line, like I had with my experience at laguna, will do this. no brakes at all, and all you are left with is the engine braking..... the key thing is to keep your head and go through the down shifts. In mine, I had a blown front line. no pedal at all. fortunately, I had backed off just a little and was starting to brake at an earlier point due it showing signs of failure a turn earlier. so, I was 120mph vs the normal 130 and a 100ft earlier braking point.
If this is a 3/4mile straight, the speeds could have been huge, like 150-160mph. then, there is no chance to recover.

your right though, boiling fluid wouldn't do it, but major air in the line could put the pedal to the floor with little braking . however, you still get a majority of the rear brakes due to cross over or front to rear master cylinder separation/safety features in some systems.

other causes could be rotor separation, master cylinder failure ,etc.

UGGGGG just watching that again. that is SO fast to hit a barrier!! especially sideways. (not good.... HANS , seat , belt and body don't work that well in a side impact) the impact to the side like that is how folks get killed. good that he tossed it sideways, because head on with not as much decal force , might not have slowed him enough to survive.. that barrier saved his axx big time! and it allowed the car to lift up and go on its side. see the hatch pop up before impact? that means there was a speed high enough to lift he hatch up. I bet he was still going 50-60mph at that point. that's scary stuff! I wonder if there is him incar video available.

Thx Mark. For those of us who are less car tech savy, good to know how things can go wrong. Good reminder to test your brakes on those tracks with long straights.

I'm definitely putting a HANS device on my Christmas list this year.

I'm sure when SHTF like that any amount of self preservation kicks in and the driver thought, well I want that wall to hit as far away from me as possible. However from a safety equipment standpoint what would be the best way to go in? Fwd and let your belts/HNR take care of you? Sideways and let your seat/halo take care of you?

No, I think it was a mostly futile attempt to scrub speed.

Going sideways at that speed almost turned it into a sailplane

Not sure if turn was intentional or it got loose in gravel and rotated

He appeared to start to wiggle it at the end if the straight.

Digging into gravel looks to flex body popping rear hatch.
