Default The next great racing Spec car/series?

My post on 944 numbers got me thinking. The current production-based Spec classes - Spec Miata, 944 Spec, Spec E30, etc. are all getting pretty old. Though they have some legs left, at some point we are going to run out of these great cars, and they will be left in the vintage ranks. 1st Gen Rx-7's, and GTI's are pretty rare these days, MG's are almost all in vintage, for example.

There are some new attempts at Spec classes, but none are "viral" yet:

Spec 3 (E36) - seems like a great idea, but hasn't taken off
Spec Boxster - maybe the closest?
Spec Z - good contingencies, but expensive to race due weight = big tires, brakes, etc.
Spec Iron (recent Mustang) - Also well supported, but heavy
MX-5 Cup - more semi-pro than club

Maybe the BRZ/FR-S some day? Seems to have potential - plentiful, light, cheap, good handling.

What says RL?

The BRZ-FRS will be the hot car of the future......probably in 5 years it will surpass most other spec series in popularity

SPB will never be as popular or grassroots compared to others on your list because of the cost of the motor alone.

Curious as to why? The guys in other series seem to be having as much fun as anyone in a P car, usually in larger fields and for less dinero.

Agreed. Other series, no doubt, are a lot of fun but I don't want to race anything else unless I'm getting paid

BRZ will happen as a spec series, but I suspect we are 5 years away. Donor cars need to be cheap before it will have the draw the Spec Miata has had.

It's simple: I want to race a Porsche.

There's "B-spec" for the Mazda2, HondaFit, Toyota Echo, Fiat500...upkeep on these things costs nothing, cars are light so consumables are low. all wrong wheel drive though

There was an Aprils fools rumor spread about "Spec Cop Car" as a budget American Iron option.

The field on SPB is healthy here in Texas and still growing, spec 996 also seemed headed in the right direction.

I've heard of a few people doing a spec series around the 350Z
