Oil cooler and lines cleaning
944 motor melted down so I need to send my cooler and lines somewhere to get them cleaned. No sense in running contaminated oil with metal bits through the new motor. So, should I send them some place special or can any machine shop/radiator shop flush them satisfactorily (at least in theory).
TIA

Yea unfortunately with the 944 the cooler is direct feed from the oil pump, prior to the filter, so it gets fed the crap directly. The builders I've dealt with trash them if you've had a spun bearing or other "distribution of particulate matter"...kinda sucks but thats the safe thing to do...

Dang it, I had one sent out and xrayed or something by a shop that re built a previous motor. Very reputable shop. Ii have no idea what the cost was but I was assuming it was cheaper than a new cooler. Maybe not.

The 944 was a purchase I made at a weak moment

There are FAA rated companies that use ultrasonic and pulse methods to clean oil coolers. I have used them 4 or 5 times for about 10 coolers in all and have not had an issue with contamination on motors the coolers were used on. They come back spotless clean, leak tested and packed in vacuum pack bags with seal caps on the ports. I get little packets of the stuff removed too if anything is found.
I have used Langfried Ultrasonic Cleaning in CA with great results every time. Had them clean two 964 oil coolers for under $120 shipped. YMMV I have no conection with them and don't mind if someone else thinks it is stupid to clean a $500 cooler even if the FAA thinks otherwise. If it is a cheap easy to find cooler by all means replace it.

JH,
Swap over to a 951 cooler set-up. I may have one.....Is it a street car?
I am looking for a 944 Auto myself......
Oh yeah, I'm sur eI have a couple NA coolers in the garage too if I didn;t throw them out.

Pacific oil cooler has done several for us without an issue. Always better to replace it if you can. We put high flow oil filters before the cooler in all our sport racers to avoid having to deal with the issue.

I had Pacific do mine, too. I cleaned the lines myself by looping them all together (I have two external coolers in front) and using a drill type pump to run five gallons of mineral spirits through. You'll be surprised at all the ugly, aerated oil stuff that comes out.

I didn't originally ask, but the aftermarket tube style coolers I would not worry about cleaning they are not that difficult, I assumed you had the factory NA oil/water or factory turbo remote cooler which are flat plate type coolers, much more difficult to clean, smaller passages and nooks and cranies...the aviation cleaning sounds like a good idea as factory coolers are the same type as a lycoming or continental. Bard to say what would be cheaper cleaning or a bigger add on cooler kit.
