Default Source for 996 headlight covers / headlight removal?

I plan to pull the headlights out of my 2003 996 and save a little weight. I'd like to cover the holes with a simple plastic cover that is common on the air cooled cars, and be able to swap back and forth between covers and having the headlights in place.

Anyone know a source for such covers? I've found lots of examples for the early stuff but nothing for the 996.

Where did you find the covers for the early cars? I have been looking, unsuccessfully.

Sorry I can't help with 996 covers.

Turns out Getty only has the 996 MkI headlight, not the later style on the 2003

They are out there, I had found some but never could get Jay to ok me pulling the headlights, he liked the look of the headlights. It's not that much weight there. I did consider finding some cheap Ebay headlights, possibly even slightly damaged ones and then gutting them into lighter units, it's way down on my list of things to do though, too many other points to make the car faster still.

You could always make some CF ones yourself, it's not really that hard to do.

Found some damaged units at Oklahoma Foreign for $50/headlight, so I will go that route. I had been looking on Ebay for a while, probably should have just started with OF to begin with.

Viking - if Jay wants to keep the look of the headlights you could have some vinyl headlight decals made up and race NASCAR style.

Thats cheap ! Now I might be tempted to do the same. Think I will see how yours turn out then decide from there.

I tried getting him to ok the decals but he wouldn't go for it. I really wanted to do a contrasting color to make it stand out more from a distance.

Received the pair of lights from Oklahoma Foreign. They are partially gutted but still surprisingly heavy with all of the housing still in place. Lens are scratched so I will probably have orange vinyl covers made that match the other graphics.

Not sure if i will attempt to save some of the housing, the bottom and the interior side, to make mounting easy or just try to mount the lens only. I'll continue to report back as the project progresss and I'll make sure to weigh the before and after.

Yes, will probably taking that car down to Houston for opening weekend. Hopefully I'll be able to close in on the car's capaibilities by then and be competitive, need some practice this winter.

For round 2 at MSR-Cresson I think I will race the 911 one day and the 996 the other, and also drive the Spec Boxster in a special run group I hope to put together as an exhibition class. All three cars will be on site so I'll drive them all. Should be fun!
