So Cal Rennlisters: Tire Shaving

Discount doesn't do it in house- they order the tires shaved from someone like Tirerack.
You can try Park Tire, I believe they are still in Kearney Mesa, they do a lot of large trucks and difficult equipment and have come thru for me when others haven't been able to do the work (split rims, etc). If they can't do it ask them who can.
There is a tire shop in El Cajon that can do it but I don't remember their name.
I don't think any of these shops will do it unless the tires are brand new.

The Buttonwillow shop has great prices on RA-1's and will shave and mount your tires.

Buttonwillow...this is true...
I checked with them (Buttonwillow) today...the down side, the RA-1 in 275 40 17 are on back order, and have been for quite some time. And as you would expect, they will only shave tires that you purchase from them.
I'll just get Hoosier or Hankook...they don't require shaving. Thanks for the heads up.

I thought you had some tires already that you needed shaved...
I got my RA1's from Chapman BMW in AZ, talk to Brian, they can send them to you shaved. They have good prices, good shipping, and you don't have to pay taxes since you are in CA.

Vilven and the other vendors listed on Toyo's website will shave them for you.
It's amazing, though, that there isn't a place in Southern California that shaves tires.

Thanks for the info....
There is one place in SoCal but they are so damn busy it is difficult to get an appointment. They will shave a new tire that you bought some other place. They brought their tire shaving lathe to Las Vegas Int. Speedway in the February POC event...sweet. You could just watch the rubber hit the floor.

The tire shop at Buttonwillow Raceway. They will only shave tires purchased from them.
Sierra Tire in Las Vegas has been very helpful as well as Topless Performance in the Phoenix area. They can provide shaved Toyo RA-1 tires, if and when available...other models too.
And finally, I did read some comments on a Corvette Board that mentioned that Tire Rack was a little sketchy when it comes to shaving tires. One guy reported that he had two shaved sets from Tire Rack, both were marginal.
And based on Jack's comments on availability, I'd think that a tire shaving business would be viable...but not for me. Talk about a nasty job.
To conclude, since the 275 RA-1 tires seem to be on permanent backorder, the choices are now Kumho 710, Hoosier and Hankook. The 710 smallest size in 17" is 245....too big for a 7" wide wheel, that leaves Hoosier and Hankook. I am out!
