Lightbulb Porsche Carrera GT wins Popular Science Magazine's Best of What's New Award

ATLANTA, November 7, 2003 - The Porsche Carrera GT was awarded the Best of What's New in the cars category in Popular Science Magazine's 2003 16th Annual "Best of What's New" awards. This award will be featured in the December issue and will be on newsstands November 12.

The Porsche Carrera GT - which will go on sale in December - was chosen for it's advanced technology and development of its chassis. The chassis, which weighs just over 220 lbs., consists mainly of carbon-fiber material with a honeycomb intermediate lay of aluminum. It features more than a thousand individual carbon-fiber reinforced sections, with up to ten superimposed layers in high-stress zones. In some cases, different forms of woven material are incorporated into these carbon-fiber layers. Where the loads are especially high, uni-directional weave is used. Low overall weight, high torsional rigidity and rigid suspension mounts results in optimum road dynamics.

The Best of What's New showcases the top 100 tech innovations in 12 categories with each category having a Grand Award. This award was granted to Porsche for the Carrera GT in the car category, in recognition of its great technical advances.

"Best of What's New is the culmination of a year's worth of searching, testing and deciding from among a huge range of products - all of which stand to change the way we live, work and play," said Scott Mowbray, editor in chief of Popular Science.
