Default 959 Memories

On the eve of leaving for Europe to take delivery of my 911R I found some photos of my old 959.

That's a beautiful 959! Congrats for both cars. What color/stripe R did you choose?

I really like that first shot of the 959. Looks like a brochure picture.

Cover of Pano January 2009, Colorado State Highway 7, Fall '08.

Looks like my R is going to be a bit delayed.

Default 959 info

Complete OEM tool kit with white gloves and torque multiplying center lock wrench. Now unobtainium.

Also notice the Radio Shack diagnostics box. The very explicit factory service manual (also in photo) gave instructions on how to "home make" this simple box that connects to the car for analog diagnostics and suspension reset. Light sequences on the dash (as Close Encounters of The Third Kind) provided information to be deciphered from the service manual. The first time I used it I was amazed when I followed a long list of seemingly nonsense instructions and then pressed one of the Radio Shack switches and the hydraulic suspension reset itself. Amazing.

The two chips in the photo are also very rare. They were part of a factory (65?) HP upgrade that specified replacing the turbos to larger 951 turbos with the replacement chips. I never did it.

The interior cabin seemed about 5% smaller than a 964. The compound curves of the rear quarter panels can only be appreciated in person and maybe even when washing the car. My car was well sorted, stock and everything worked. I drove it everywhere.

Glad to hear it made print at the time. Certainly enjoy your non-typical shots, I am fascinated by the tech of this era. Not quite fully digital, but not yet ready to let go of entrenched ideas.

Beautiful 959 with very cool accessories! Even the 959 sculpted key chain! Glad to see you drove it and were able to get a good amount of use out of it.

Great to hear personal stories about these amazing cars!

These little boxes are interesting. An indicator of hand-construction and personality of each one. Very cool.

Too bad they don't play the music from Close Encounters with the Third Kind!

Yes, this is very true.
