I also put together recommendation for the
immediate area surrounding Carmel for Rennlisters
coming to Rennsport V back in 2015. Here is that
list:

Other restaurants in Carmel Valley & Carmel Valley Village that I recommend:

Baja Cantina (Mexican) on 7166 Carmel Valley Road (not far from Carmel-by-the-Sea):
http://www.carmelcantina.com
The weekly gathering of sport cars & hot rods is on Thursdays!

The Baja Cantina owner, auto collector Pat Phinny, also is the proprietor of 'Turn 12'
restaurant (American) in downtown Monterey - thus named because Laguna Seca
has 11 turns! http://www.turn12barandgrill.com

*********

'Carmel Valley Village' (20/30 minute drive from Carmel). Can also be accessed via
Laureles Grade from Route 68 in vicinity of Laguna Seca):

Corkscrew on 55 West Carmel Valley Road / Carmel Valley Village
http://www.corkscrewcafe.com
The owners, Walter & Gaston Georis, also are the proprietors of Casanova &
The Biclyclette in Carmel. Gaston drives a Boxster.

Cafe Rustica on 10 Del Fino Pl / Carmel Valley Village
http://www.caferusticavillage.com

Lokal on 13762 Center Street
http://www.lokalcarmel.com/about-us.html

Wine Tasting
Bernardus Winery Tasting Room on 5 West Carmel Valley Road / Carmel Valley Village
http://www.bernardus.com
Bernardus Winery is owned by Ben Pon, an ex-Porsche factory driver,
whose family are Porsche (& VW Group) importers for Holland!

Talbott Vineyards Tasting Room on 5 Pilot Road, Carmel Valley Village
http://www.talbottvineyards.com
Talbott was owned by a friend, notable motorcycle collector, Robb Talbott!
It has just been sold. Robb used to have part of his extensive motorcycle
collection on display at the tasting room.

Carmel Mid-Valley
Jeffrey's Grill / 112 Mid Valley Center / Great Breakfast & Brunch spot.
Halfway to Carmel Village. Closer to Quail Lodge & Carmel proper!
http://www.jeffreysgrillandcatering.com

*******

By the way, you can drive from Carmel to Greenfield (on 101, south of Salinas)
via Monterey County G16 Road. Pretty twisty...and a good interior road to drive your Porsche!

http://www.seemonterey.com/things-to...scenic-drives/

Due to the current Soberanes Fire, suggest you check with CalFire
before coming up G16 from 101 in Greenfield just in case of unexpected road closure:

Eduardo,

Ur da man!

Your touring guides for Carmel are always excellent.

Now that you've moved, your Carmel parties are history as well

I feel privileged to have attended the LAST Eduardo Rennsport Reunion party in Carmel. You were a great host!

Thank you Mike.

As an aside, I have been hearing rumors in the past few
days here at Monterey Car Week from well-connected
Porsche friends that seem to think PCNA is intent on
doing Rennsport VI at Laguna Seca in the Fall of 2017.

You heard it first here folks! If that is the case, we will be
coming back for that...so there is a chance for one more
grand party in Carmel at a rented house!

By the way, I believe this is 'Acid Green Metallic'. It might
be the same car I photographed at Rennsport V last Sept.

It is #872, in case some of you are familiar with this car.

It was photographed by me at the Porsche Zentrum at
Quail on Wednesday. When I asked the Porsche staff
if the owner was around (it had Reeves dealer plates
so it might be a car looking for a new owner!), they
told me someone had parked it with them the night
before so it could be in a safe place. It was still there
at 1 PM on Wednesday afternoon!

Hello Edouardo,

Your post could be seen, at least to my eyes, as a bit confusing !
The 911R that shows the (French) license plate 5573QD14 is **not** #17, but it is #003 !
(I think the Ingram Collection still do own both of these two.)
Some "bad rumors" have said (is it true or not, ..that's another question ???) that #017, could have had a quite bad accident when it was own by Mr. Posada and the chassis could have been replaced. Some even have said that this could have been the reason why the Ingram Collection have bought (later) #003, that should be "more original", ..than #017 !

Some recent photos, (personal, dated Rennsport Reunion 2015) to show some "strange" details of #017 :

Name: 911R%20door%20comp.jpg
Views: 1994
Size: 90.7 KB

See the front part of the door : straight on #017, while on #003 or #015, (that is VERY original btw), you will see the typical "R offset" in the lower part of the door.
Note that I also have heard some people saying that the "door offset" of #003 ..could be seen as a little bit "over done" !!!
(One thing is for sure, the door offset of #015 is ..exactly as it should be, ..for a real R !)
Also the seem (just above the "lift" slot) is still "lead" fed, that is typically "non R" !!! (In all the "R", that seem has not been fed with lead, ..i.e.: to save on weight !)

The #17 historic info that you posted, seems quite correct to my knowledge, except that I never read anything about Mr. Guzman in Mexico in 1990. Some documents shows that Mr. Eads found it dead in Mexico, bought it, and it took him some time and a lot of efforts to bring it back in California in 1985, so I doubt that the car went back to Mexico after that ! This could part of the strange history of #017 ?

Now, about #003, in my opinion it should be like :
Original : plate S-K2401, car used by Porsche factory (PSE)
I understood that this is one of the few R that has been tested by the factory with the 4 overhead cam engine, so, the rear chassis should still have "cuts" that was needed to fit such engine in the car.
August 1969, sold to Sonauto, French importer
September 1969, Plate 1248 EU 59, Mr. Michel Martinache,
August 1970 : for sale for French Francs 40'000.- (peanuts) on the french magazine "Échappement",
Sep. 1970 : bough by "Gédéhem" (the nick name of Mr. Gérard Dantan-Merlin, or GDM !), licence plate : 5573 QD 14.
The 23 Sept. 1970 : Grand National, TOUR de FRANCE Auto, Gédéhem, car n°303, win all classes.
Mai 1971, Sonauto then ??
1984 sold to a person in the South of France.
In 2006, still in original shape, never restored. But, ..was also mentioned as "restored" for sometime on the website of « Scuderia Classica » (Monaco) !
2015 (exact date ?) Bought by the collection Ingram / Road Schollars.
Car shown during Rennsport Reunion V, Sep. 2015, Laguna Seca.

Yes, the (***24***) 911R are my love, so, I have a quite deep folder on these !!!
Amitiés, all the Best,
GVA-SFO

PS : Yes, 20 production cars, but, let's do not forget the 4 Prototypes ! (i.e.: total = 24)

May be, let’s show here the chassis numbers of these 24 cars :

a) the 4 Prototypes, assembled at the factory :
305876 (R/1) Light Yvory
306681 (R/2) Red
307670 (R/4) Yellow
307671 (R/3) Orange

b) The 20 « production cars, assembled by Baur, coach builder, Germany)

118 9 9002
118 9 9003

Thank you for the correction, GVA-SFO. Indeed I picked the
wrong 1967 911R from the Ingram Collection. The #017
has apparently been since sold by the Ingrams. This car was
owned formerly by Warren Eads, then Peter Kitchak, both of
whom I know personally.

So indeed the car in display is #003, currently in the Ingram
Collection:

Thanks Eduardo,

..It was a kind of typo then !

If you discuss with Mr. Warren Eads, you should ask him about his journey when he brought #017 from Mexico to California. I think it was a quite interesting adventure !

On the above (great) photo that you post, in the car with n°5, we can recognize very well Mr. Gérard Dantan-Merlin.
When you see "GédéHem", his "nickname", this is the French "spelling" in a kind of slang written way, of his initials, i.e.: GDM !

By the way, do you have an idea where #017 went now ?

Thanks + all the best,

Hello Eduardo,

I love your post with the DKW, ..and the Panhard.

Do you know what these two cars in common ?
-> Both have two stroke engines !
(yes, no camshaft no valves on these cars !!!)

Also, DKW becomes Auto Union, ..the firm that become then Audi !!
By the way, this is the reason of the four “rings” of the Audi logo, as Auto Union was the result of the merge of 4 brands : DKW, Audi, Horch and Wanderer !
Later, as we know, Auto Union becomes Audi, ..but the 4 rings logo was kept !
(..or : ”Our cousins“ ! )

Now, about the Panhard, the model shown is a rare “PL17” cab !
(The very common one was the 4 doors sedan.)
Do you know that these cars have also something in “common” with “our” brand ?
These Panhard have a Boxer engine, that is ..air cooled ! (Located in the front of the front wheels, ..i.e.: the reverse of a 911 !, and it is a front wheel drive.)
..but only Two (2) cylinders. I thing they were 850 CC, or, about the same displacement of the cylinder of a 356, i.e.: 4 of these would be 1600 CC, while the two of the Panhard would do 850 CC !!

Very funny. I do remember the time when we could see these cars in Europe on the road, I always completely dislike the Panhard, often called “Panard”, the slang French word for “pied”, i.e.: in English : Foot !!
Also, Panhard do not exist anymore, it was acquired ..by Citroën !
(The inventor of the so great ..Air Suspension !)

Thanks for these photos.

Oups, I just realize that I'm talking about Panhard, ..on the Supercars Chapter. I think this is a complete "upside down" World, I bet that this is the VERY first time on the World, that this brand is mentioned on a Supercar topic ! I should shut right away !
Sorry for this two stroke pollution !

Thanks Eduardo and GVA-SFO. Great stuff! I love the details that you experts put in your posts.

Just a question, Eduardo, is the number of this car #007/991 on the plaque inside too? I'm not sure the VIN corresponds to the "number" of the car. For instance, in the case of the car for sale at Bonhams, which is VIN ...4097, the car is numbered #135 (not #097). I would have thought the car at Quail would be a preproduction #000, and not a ROW (as evidenced by the rear bumper and the ZZZ's in the VIN) production/customer car.

Hello,

What I do know here in USA, the last three digits of 918 VIN is what is assigned on the interior plaque is on the dashboard of the 911R. The 911R VIN here in the USA has nothing to do with the interior plaque. The complete VIN posted of the 911R being auctioned at Bonhams is WP0ZZZ99ZGS194097. The 911R VIN here in the USA have a different prefix and starts with WP0AF2A90GS195### (# = numeral)

Thanks for that info Fan1. Looks like they're not following the 918 VIN convention for the R VINs then.

BTW, I've found other photos of the Quail R that show it is one of the #000 cars.
