Default GMG exhaust on Carrera GT

Hey guys, I had a tough time finding user feedback on the GMG exhaust for Carrera GT when i was researching it so this is just a quick review in case anyone here is considering it.

I had it installed during the 10k mile service at Porsche North Houston and was definitely impressed with PNH service all the way around, very thorough and professional - i’ve dealt with them in the past so no surprise there.

For me, the sound of a sports car is a big part of the driving experience and with the Carrera GT it is doubly so. It’s the greatest sounding car i’ve ever heard by a large margin so i was a bit nervous to mess with that, particularly given how crappy some of the straight pipes sound to me.

After hearing some clips of the GMG system though I was super impressed and took a chance on it (it’s completely reversible after all).

GMG was great to work with and got the exhaust out pretty quick.

the manufacture/fabrication quality is obvious:

On start up the car is certainly louder and telegraphs more crackly menace but it quickly settles into an idle that, while edgier and carrying more low frequency volume than stock, isn’t unreasonable for a street car.

In the lower rpm range the car is still very CGT, just with some bassier notes added and some nice low frequency exhaust chortle on upshifts that wasn’t there with the stock system. It is louder in this range than before, but nothing over the top. Driving through a quiet neighborhood you’re not going to anger the neighbors, it just sounds better/fuller.

Move into the 3,700 - 5,300 rpm range and that all changes. The engine is clearly breathing more freely and that characteristic F1 sound comes to the forefront. Only more so. It is definitely louder and distinctly CGT but now carries a jet engine character that enhances its “F1-ness”.

Spool up into the higher rpm range and it becomes an absolute war cry. It is much louder and the F1 character is fully accentuated across the sound spectrum with a deep muscular rumble and new timbres in the mid and higher frequencies that transform it into something more hair-raising and violent. it’s a more multi-dimensional/visceral palette of sound relative to stock. the notes are exhilarating, you don’t need to glance at the tach, the car tells you where it is.

At 6,000+ there is no mistaking it for anything but a full-tilt race car. You will be sneaking up on no one. It is shocking (several car people have commented “frightening”) and the greatest sound I’ve ever heard come out of a car.

With GMG, the CGT sound remains distinctly intact, but it's an edgier/racier/more powerful version of it that shouldn’t be missed.

I couldn’t be happier with it.

(phone recordings of it don’t convey enough to bother posting;
but you really must hear it in person to understand)

Sounds impressive. The GMG unit looks like a straight pipe? Correct?

it's an x-pipe. you can see the crossing piece in the pic next to the muffler it replaces.

this is probably psychosomatic, but i think the exhaust is still breaking in. just got back from a great drive with Jrtaylor9 and it sounded better/louder than last time out, a bit more opened up. not to mention the burning chemical-y smell

you can see the whole system here:

http://www.gmgracing.com/store/2005/...st-series.html

it uses an x-pipe style crossover in place of the stock muffler and has silencers before and after the crossover section

Curious, are you happier to be back on the stock exhaust? Could you share your experience.

i knew immediately i'd made a mistake putting OEM back on. it felt neutered compared to gmg.

oem cgt sounds great no doubt, but GMG exhaust is just next level. it sounds waaay racier, howl-y, etc. just better all the way around - unless you're trying to be subtle.

next time i brought it in for some service had the GMG re-installed.

every person i drive with and every person at PNH felt the same way, "don't ever do that again" LOL

it really does sound like an old-school LMP car and i definitely won't be putting oem back on anytime soon

^ E88 wont fit CGT, BBS has a magnesium versoin in 18" one piece for CGt. very limited tire choices however.
i don't have the car, but i have the wheels, just in case my lottery number is up.
