Default New Air Cooled Engine

Several weeks ago, we dynoed our air cooled, six cylinder test engine -- 4 liter, 2 valve, normally aspirated. Result was 430 HP with street gas and a catalytic converter. There are several modifications that various engineers have suggested which should result in approximately 440 HP. Given parts that have to be added, made and those that require modification, the next dyno run will be January. After that, on to the 4 valve version which, if successful, will be available to anyone and should generate in excess of 500 HP.

This engine is in no car but, yes, I think it would be interesting in, e.g., the Singer offering.

BTW, the current plan is that the 4-valve engine would have pneumatic valve springs.

Exciting news! Have the guys at Singer been talking to you about a potential collaboration? I think the two together would bring the air-cooled 911 to a whole new level, I'm truly excited.

If possible, do you mind sharing more details of the engine that you've just tested (weight, redline, and torque etc.)?

Thank you in advance.

Candidly, we had some discussions but they did not go anywhere. Nevertheless, as Singer imaginations are based upon 964's, i would be happy to supply Singer owners with parts up to and including engines to go to the new level you mentioned.

Robert I'd be interested. I'm starting a 964 AWD project car and the total output i'm aiming for is 500hp. Also swapping a lot of panels for CF etc trying to get down to 2550lbs

Latest Update: 2-valve engine set to run again as soon as new valves are delivered. Modifications too numerous to mention other than knock sensor and very different heads. Hoping for 440+ HP. Further, 4-valve design has begun and we are evaluating several fairly rare materials. Feel free to contact me with questions.

That is going to be a monster! Almost 5lbs/hp - wowzers.

Why AWD? Is it to be able to put down that 500hp more effectively?

The missing parts for what should be the final iteration of the 2-valve air cooled base engine shipped today. The hope is to be on dyno by the beginning of April. Meantime work on the 4-valve engine continues.

Unfortunately, the camshafts came in and the manufacturer was slightly off from the drawing. As a result, we are a few weeks behind.

Notwithstanding, our initial 2-valve design produced approximately 430 HP on, as noted above, street gas and with a catalyric converter. Singer claims, I am told, approximately 390 HP but I suspect that this might not be with a cat. If that is the case, the catalytic converter could cost approximately 10 HP. On the other hand, we have not run endurance tests yet and that might cost us HP although it might only require somewhat modified components. Further, our latest 2-valve engine design has 18 significant modifications from the initial design and I am hopeful that some of this might increase HP. Should know in a few weeks. Additionally, should anyone be interested in this motor, we could offer it in various weight configurations due to having some expertise in that area (e.g., our carbon fiber induction system no doubt weighs less than the metal box used by Singer and that is rearward and high up weight).

To a 4-valve air cooled engine, both of us are working on one and I would not presume to compare the two until more information exists. For certain, however, if our engine works, you will not have to buy a car to get one. And, again, assuming it works, we will offer it in various weight configurations.

Finally, we would be happy to offer either engine to Singer owners.

Any plan to tune a turbocharged version of the 4-valve engine?

If, however, there were enough people who wanted a 4-valve, air cooled turbo charged engine, I could look into it.
