TAG Porsche McLaren coffee table finished at last
I haven't posted much on Rennlist since I went over to the dark side, but I think you guys might appreciate this...
About 15 years ago I found an old TAG-Porsche engine block on eBay. It comes from a McLaren MP4/2 F1 car from the mid-'80s. It was a table base for a while with a flat piece of glass resting on the head studs, but it had been sitting in the cellar when I got the idea two years ago to do it right. My old friend and rally car builder Bert Arano took on the project as a side job, and worked on it when he had time. He took my sketch and came up with a steampunk spaceframe design using brazed steel tubing. Even in the '80s F1 cars had carbon tubs, so it's not strictly period, but I think it came out great.
The patina on the steel tubes is a "cold-gun blue" (selenium dioxide), the joints are the actual color of bronze brazing rod, and everything has acrylic clear coat.

Very Cool!
Nice piece of history worked into a nice piece of furniture. I'm curious do you know if the block came from an actual engine that competed? Kind of cool if Nikki Lauda or Alain Prost put that exact engine through it's paces.

here is my version, found a 1974 engine on ebay for $1,000 two years ago, added carbs and stacks, finally a fan with housing. Engine came in 5 heavy boxes, had everything sandblasted and had fun putting it together. In the end I spent about $2,000 on every including shipping and sand blasting. I've always wanted to do this and when I moved into my office at work I plenty of room.
