2012 Cayman R Advice & Insight
Well after years of BMWs I'm thinking about getting into my first Porsche! Top of my list is the 2012 Cayman R. I've been doing some research on the car along with checking out the marketplace. Very few cars for sale, but they're out there. Hoping for PDK with Sport Chrono and Sport Exhaust.
I'd love to hear from other R owners with any thoughts on the car, reliability, what I should look for, what I should hope to spend (budget is $55k or less ideally), etc.
Thanks in advance!

Great car. I have about 45k mi on mine and a lot of track days. Overall reliable- warranty covered a failed PCM, one waterpump and a PDLS bracket. I have the 6MT and recently the shift cable broke outside of warranty. Have done a few track mods- added GT3 LCAs and Tarret rear toe arms for more camber, added the center radiator to improve cooling, GT3 brake ducts, Cantrell roll bar.
An important option to consider is the seats. Standard spec was sport bucket seats but many don't have them. They can be retrofitted but costly (8-10k). Not for everyone but if they fit you they are great and really suit the character of the car. Best of luck in the search.

Great car !
I have owned the car for three years cpo purchase from dealer. Nothing other than regular maintenance. Don't get to hung up on sport exhaust you can always add one after the purchase.

Thank you for the replies! Not many of these cars out there for sale but I am patient. Seems like, from my research, that buying a car with the sport bucket seats is basically a "must" versus the regular sport seats. Everything else is basically gravy on top. The search continues!

I have owned my CR since July 2013 and now have 15k miles. Great car, seems reliable, and a fine compliment to my 993. I have the sport seats and that is what I personally prefer as I do not track the car. I understand the desirability of the sport buckets, but I bought the car to suit my needs, not a hypothetical re-sale buyer. Good luck in your search!

I was also a Roundel/propeller head (E30 M3, 335i, X3, 535is, E36 M3, E30 325is, etc.) and started lusting after a Cayman R. We've had ours for two years and it's a great choice, IMHO.
Handles like a go cart, nice power, rare, mid-engine, great looks, great sounds from that engine!
After two years, I'm finally remembering to hold the key in my left hand.

Daily drive mine with 43k on the odo. Only issues I have had was motor in passenger window stopped working, and shift cable broke. Both replaced under cpo warranty.
Love the car, added ipd plenum, upgraded the brakes, cooling ducts etc. Suspension is going to be updated next year and adding 3rd radiator.

Some great information here, thanks everyone! If anyone knows of an R for sale that's not listed on the usual sites, please let me know. Anxious to get into my first Porsche.
