Default 3.8 conversion questions

I am considering attempting to do a 3.8 conversion on my 2009 Cayman S myself. The plan is to buy a DFI 911 9A1 engine with the X51, pull my engine, transfer over the pieces from my engine necessary to make it work in my car, and put the new engine in. (I will likely need a shop's help with the electronics, but i can do he rest myself.)

Here are my questions:
1. How does one go about procuring a remanufactured engine from PCNA?
2. Has anyone done this as a DIY project who would care to share how it's done?

I've done a fair amount of mechanical work over the years, so i think i can do most of it myself, but would like some insight as to things like manifold interchangeability and the like.

Thanks to anyone who wants to share info. I'll do a build thread to show progress.

Recently was just reading posts on the forum and saw that BGB does this conversion. I can offer no help other than i saw on their website that a 9A1 engine with x51 is $22k. They say you engine core is worth $9500 IIRC. Not sure this helps but it is the only info i have on the matter.

Vision Motorsports sells crate engines. You can speak to either Dwain or Roland.

Several years ago one of the magazines had a write up about a guy transferring a motor out of a 911 into a Boxster. He too thought it'd be an easy swap on a number of things but it turned out it wasn't nearly as simple as he expected.

Does anyone remember which magazine it was that covered that story? Excellence maybe?

I don't expect it to be an easy swap, but there are lots of cars out there where it has been done, and lots of shops that do it, so it's not impossible.

Just so you know what you are contemplating, here are some line items from an invoice on a BGB 3.8 conversion (just the labor):

- 4 hours, remove existing engine
- 6 hours, prep new engine for install
- 8 hours, convert existing 3.4L engine wiring harness and engine plumbing
- 16 hours, convert upgraded engine harness & plumbing to 987.2 spec
- 10 hours, install new engine

And if you return the 3.4L engine add 6 hours to prep & dress core engine for return to dealership.

Should keep you busy for a while!

Now multiply those numbers by 5x to reflect my ineptitude!

I spent 7 years doing a frame-off restoration of a 1966 Corvette. They journey was long but quite rewarding.

Years ago I came upon a 996 3.4l swap to a 2.5l Boxster this in a UK published car mag. The swap wasn't too hard but there were some gotchas.

The intake manifold has to be turned around. The engine mounts need spacers as the 3.4l engine sits a bit too high. There is the exhaust system that needs attention.

I do not have a PDF of this article but I have a PDF of a write up that someone did on a similar swap I can email you. Send me a PM with an email address that can accept a PDF file of around 1.8MBytes in size and I'll email it to you.

Also, Pelican web site has a section devoted to engine swaps with some pretty good write ups.
