Yes is the answer to your question... Agreed...

I couldn't agree more with the presenters over at Carfection UK. From the very begining (thats forever) a sports cars charm in large part is a raucous exhaust note. The same is true today.... The neu Porsche 4cyl engines exhaust note is offensive to Subaru and an in-your-face insult to the Porsche sports car community.
Shame on you PAG,,,, emission threshold standards be dammed !

One approach is to quiet the 718 Cayman S 4cyl exhaust note ... minimize its offence.

The search for a late model, loaded/GTS etc., normally aspirated 6cyl Cayman S continues .... Aftermarket firm TPC Racing offers a 6cyl Cayman turbo kit if you must: www.tpcracing.com

I've read a couple reviews now where the reviewer really loved the car -- except for the sound. I'm waiting to experience it myself before passing judgement, but needless to say, the consistency of the complaints about the sound are worrisome.

Than again, if it's really a big deal, we can just wait for the next GT4 with its NA 6 to arrive:

What I find interesting about the 4 cylinder sound discussion is that a) it's pretty universally panned and b) the 944/968 sound is fairly well liked. I also have an '87 944 Turbo with a 3" Lindsey Racing exhaust with a Magnaflow muffler. I have yet to encounter anyone in the Porsche community that didn't like the sound of it. In fact, I hear more often than not how great it sounds.

The 4cyl boxer engine exhaust tone is quite distinguished - ala the long standing Subaru WRX exhaust character. Enter Porsche's new 4cly opposed cylinder "Boxer" engines; The Subaru 4cyl boxer and Porsche's 4cyl boxer exhaust tone are birds of a feather .....

The Audi/Porsche engines in-line 4cyl exhaust tone character, that of the popular 944/944S2/968 series is rather neutral ... The MY87 944 coupe (Stone Grey ext./Grey Beige int.) as my daily driver for years hadn't much of an exhaust note to speak of ... rather subdued exhaust character.. FWIW.

I say for current 4cyl 718 Boxster / 718 Cayman series ... keep the exhaust tone quiet, draw no attention.... Simply settle in with the available low end turbo torque character.

I can assure you that my '87 944 Turbo is right there with my '11 Cayman S in the go fast department with a slight nod to the Cayman mainly because of the PDK transmission.

Default 944 turbo coupe, 944 turbo S coupe ... Gotta Luv'em

+1 ... Back in the day toyed around with the 944 turbo S idea; luv'd the Stone Grey metallic over Grey beige interior - hatchback functionality, 50/50 weight balance, etc. Lest I digress. Turbo lag like you read about though .... 1 Missisippi, 2 Missisippi, 3 ........

Yes, it absolutely does. There's no substitute for that 3.4

Who has a 718 they would like to drop off at Fabspeed for a full treatment on resolving this issue? PM me if interested

We have already seen superb potential and transformation out of the 991.2. We are confident in finding the hidden spirit of the 718 as well.

For reference...

Default NVH

Someone once said: "That sounds like a Volkswagen Beetle, I'm not kidding you! I tell the guys, 'You're joking with this sound, right?'"

While I love a great exhaust note, I'm slowly starting to accept that with "emission this and that" and "electrics coming" I might have to give something up.

But, I just can't get over the harshness, bellow, bass, drone, the vibration. I can't even describe it. As soon as you start the car you can tell the NVH isn't as refined as the old 6. I'm getting over the sound, but not the "Beetle" harshness and rhythm. Yeah, I know its day and night more modern, but its in there...

I don't get if they really couldn't smooth it out a wee bit, or if they though brash would sell?
Or maybe going 4 was premature and it was just market differentiation; the M4 is still a 6...

So are you selling yours?

I keep seeing all this hate for the sound of that engine. Maybe I am already prepared for comedown - I don't even think the 981.2 sounds as good as my OG R32. But I do wonder if some are trying to FUD the car out of existence? Maybe they want the Cayman/Boxster to just go away?

wasn't R32 a 6 cylinder? I would rather to see the 981.2 as a 718 instead of continuation of the 981. Having a 981 and 718 at home, 718 is a nice Porsche in its own class.
