Default Oil Separator Replacement

I'm not on the Cayman forum too much since our 8 year old, 55k mile '08 Cayman Base has been so trouble-free. Had a minor issue yesterday that got repaired that I thought was worth sharing. Sorry if this is common-place.

Yesterday while driving the Cayman to pick up my '88 911 after some rust repair, we had some interesting symptoms. Earlier in the day, my wife said the car stalled a time or two but she attributed it to some temps in the low 30s as well as a clutch that probably needs replacing soon.

On the way to pick up the 911, I was driving and had the car stall once coming out of the parking lot. During the drive, we noticed a sound from the engine that wasn't quite a belt squeal, but almost a whistling. About that time, while at a red light, the RPM increased to 1500. The whistling was increasing in volume. It went away as we started driving.

Luckily this all happened just about 1 km from the mechanic.

Today, we picked it up and it was the oil separator, 9961070260. Inexpensive part and now we are on the road again.

When I first started hearing things I was concerned about the IMS issue, but I don't think that has been a significant issue in the 08 models compared to the earlier ones. i do continue to convince my wife that we need a Cayman GTS so that we never have to worry about an engine replacement. She's not going for it!

Luckily, we have found a great local Porsche mechanic in Stuttgart.

the sound of squealing like a pig and stalling are common symptoms of a failing AOS .you were lucky it did not fail causing the engine to take in quarts of oil causing major damage and cost. good luck on trying to talk the wife into an upgraded car

Is this something folks change periodically or just drive to fail? I'm good about doing all the scheduled maintenance from the manual and don't recall this being mentioned as something to change/service.

Thoughts?

i do not think it is a maintenance thing BUT if i was having some work done on the car and it had to be removed and had a lot of miles i would change it.

Just to build on this thread, has anyone replaced the stock AOS with the PMNA 996 AOS. The 987 AOS price is out of this world. Or alternatively just replace with another stock AOS.

I suffered from the "squeal" at startup which I believe is the AOS starting to go bad.

Inputs much appreciated

Default AOS

I see there is a clamp that can be purchased that has a blue tab to hold it open until installation is complete. Anyone have a part number for it? Also I watched a video where someone replaced the top hose, happen to have a part number for that? I think it is. 11617533399 for the hose.

Thanks

I had the same problem as you. I had the AOS replaced, the plugs replaced (which were only 6 months old), the cylinders cleaned out, and the oil changed......$1800 in Miami. It ran well for three weeks. Now it fails to idle properly, and it stalls when I come to a stop (manual transmission). If I turn off the A/C, I can keep it running, but, hey, I live in Miami. It has not started to squeal like it did the first time. But, what is going on?

Sounds like a vacuum leak from a disconnect hose on the intake tract. Take a good look to see if something has come loose.

I had similar symptoms this past winter. Replacing the MAF seemed to do the trick for me.
