I fully expect the Cayman GT4 to be just what Porsche designed it be and what their paying customers expect it to be. Of course their is always the possibility that my assumption is just as big as yours.
We'll see. I think a lot of people saw the wing and the GT prefix and that, coupled with the whole 'a mid-engined car is better than a 911, it just needs more power' mantra, jumped on it thinking it was a supercar. In reality it has all the performance of a 991S, which, interestingly most people view as a soft grand touring car these days.

Porsche does a fantastic job marketing its cars to appeal to various niches. But in reality, save for a few truly special models, they're all pretty similar performers.

While this car is pulling in some gt3 owners to buy it as an additional car I don't think gt3 customers are it's target market. I think most buyers will be repeat Boxster/cayman customers or people who want a GT spec car but cannot afford a gt3. Lots of 997 Carrera owners talking about buying this car.

I think there will be some 996/997 GT3 customers who refuse to buy a paddle-shifter who may try a GT4. Until the facelift 991.2 GT3 offers a manual (rumored possibility), this is the most interesting and well priced alternative.

I think anyone who's driven the latest GT3, paddle shifters and all, will be sadly disappointed with the performance of the GT4.

I think those will be the guys who buy the GT4 as an and. I can't imagine selling a 996 or 997 GT3 and buying a GT4.

Since the GT3 costs over 50% more than GT4, I would hope those customers would have reasonable expectations regarding objective performance. On a short technical track, I expect the lap times and involvement/enjoyment gap to be much narrower than the large gulf in prices.

Sure there will be some of that. Some of those cars are over 10 years old now and there can be many reasons to replace or add to those with a new car (i.e. 4-Year track warranty and Euro Delivery come to mind first).

Just a different market. $100K manual track car. $150K PDK track or road car. Never forget the market of those with money who want the coolest thing. There is a reason that 911s outsell Caymans besides performance.

Some may have already compared - Will the GT4 out preform the 997 GT3?

I have a 991 GT3. It's fabulous and a keeper. A real performance exotic at the highest level of engineering. It can easily be an occasional DD. But can be a bit intense and require a mood.

My wife has a Cayman S cabriolet. I like taking a spin in it occasionally. The Cayman S is simply a fun well balanced touring car. I have moments were i prefer drive it depending were I'm going. Could use a little more pep.

The GT4 might be fun to modify and play around since the cost is relatively low - adding mufflers, performance parts and beat it up a bit. Plus, if I track the GT3 or go on a road tour, I could bring along the GT4 for company. Nice to share the fun.

Yup, agree. My RS has not been on the road since 09. 997C2S has the 996 GT3 seats so I seldom drive it on the road. Wifey takes it on the road once in a while, but mostly uses it for autox.
I had not planned on registering the GT4 but wifey wants to drive it on the road so maybe register for one year. Then some crazy alignment, Hoosier A7s and drive the snot out of it at autocross. I am hoping it will be faster than my RS. Even though the RS has a lot of goodies helping it.

Spoke to the sales manager of a midwest Porsche dealer where I have my name down for several cars. He mentioned that there was a dealer meeting at PCNA in Atlanta where all of the dealers were pushing PCNA for more GT4 cars. The result is that PCNA requested PAG provide at least double the number of GT4s already allocated (he mentioned that around 900 GT4s were allocated already). So if PAG listens then the US could see 1,800-2,000 GT4s. This dealer already got 6 GT4s allocations (2 for 918 owners).

Good information. So, PCNA requested double the original number to maybe 2000 GT4's for the USA? Guess it might not be as limited as marketed. Simple build with that Carrera S motor. Profitable and make the dealers happy.

Guess i might get one! We will see.

Basic premise of the tread
