My first Porsche (:

My first Porsche (:
2011 Metallic silver S PDK chrono PSM , "delete pkg" Nav 31,123 miles ..all my wanted options,
My first Porsche at 67 birthday. Probably paid too much but just kept coming back to this one..FL car in absolutely showroom condition. Bought it from Millenia Motors in Longwood Fl, Dealt with Oliver Loor a no nonsense great guy..check out his website for great cars.. Started negotiating 8 weeks ago, he gave me his lowest acceptable at first counter and in 8 weeks I got him down $250 , my biggest concern is the warranty ran out in Jan this year, and Not a CPO. ...saw several a few thousand cheaper but not with all I wanted..Finally the wife just said "get off the computer and go buy it!" She was tired of my "sheet metal porno" addiction..(: My first car was a 6 month old 66 Chevy II 327/350 HP...I then joined the Navy got married and had kids...had "responsible" vehicles ...put kids through collage , put family first and lived as a resp adult for the next 45 years, retired from the US Submarine service and just retired as GM of a large company here in Charleston last month..Took the train down Friday and drove it home Saturday, I still cant get the smile off my face.
I must share a personal story with you, many of you will probably rebuke me for being irresponsible and careless and you would be justified ..When I got back home I had to go show it to all my buddies and let them "feel the magic: as I had,,many of them like me were throw backs from the muscle car days of the sixties..that had thought the best cars were gone...None( like myself) had never driven a Porsche. I have one of my best friends with ALS (5th year) I drove up in his yard and he came out ..and had to set in it..ALS starts at the top or bottom..his started at the top and at this time he really cant hold a fork.. as he set in the seat and after much time got his hands on the wheel his fingers locked on..I said lets take her for a spin..he started to get out and I said "no u drive" He grinned...and went went,,he does live in a remote area and we found a few miles of deserted hwy rolled to a stop and I Put it in "Plus" told him to "put in on the floor and dont let up until you are ready"..He let off at 128 mph. Yes , I knew the risk and so did he..We have no right to endanger others, but the feeling I had watching him "live" what may be that last good ride was worth it when the only lives were ours.,,,dont be too hard on me. All three of them told me they had never experienced anything like that first ride at speed in a Porsche.....WoW !

Congratulations on a fine looking Cayman.
It is always nice to see such enthusiasm for Porsche ownership.
I'm not gonna knock you for the trip with your friend though.
Yes it was dangerous, and you might have paid plenty (financially and emotionally) if something had happened. But nothing happened and so it's in the past.
Since you are new to Porsche, you may not truly understand yet how good the cars are dynamically.
Meaning that their overall balance and handling are truly their greatest feature, and not necessarily how they handle straight line speed.
If you are impressed with the speed and stability, wait until you try some handling moves. That's where the car shines!

Congratulations and welcome to the fold.
You'll have a blast in a car that looks very much like the '11 I traded last month.
You were very generous to let the friend who has ALS blast up to speed. I'm glad that he had a great time (and that that both of you and the car made it through safely).
Enjoy!

I was at Starbucks the other day and was talking to a guy that had a new Cayman S. He had every generation of corvettes new. This was his first Porsche and he loved how tight it felt compared to his old cars. I thought the new corvette was a deal, great engine, same price as a cayman. But even this die hard Chevy fan had enough.
Enjoy the car. Keep it under 100. All the fun is going around corners in 2nd 3rd and 4th.
Book a trip to NC this summer and drive the tail of the dragon. 8 hour drive from Orlando.

Congratulations on your Cayman purchase. The smile sticks. We bought a 2011 Cayman Base the week before Christmas. 17K miles, most options, 6MT. Been on a couple of short drives, but mostly it's in the garage waiting for spring. Similar situation as yours, age 67, been retired 6 years, first Porsche, history of British sports cars in 20's. Wife likes to drive it also for her girls day out. Live long and drive on.

whippa -- you have made a wonderful choice for a first porsche... don't worry about the non-cpo - these are very reliable generally, especially with the dfi engine and second gen electronics...
the 987 chassis is very very special. imho it is the most 'alive' and the most 'shrink-wrapped' of all modern porsches, to me these are the essence of a true sports car, it is an extension of yourself through the machine, you wear it like a wetsuit...it is simply brilliant
i agree with the others... this car is about building momentum, taking corners, nudging the (very high) limits, and when you get there, ''it's just butter'' as they say...learn to drive it quickly and smoothly...it has layers and layers of depth that takes years to appreciate...imho it is one of the truly great sports cars -- EVER.
congrats...

Whippa,
Congrats! I just did the same thing as you did. I am 72, and vowed to have a Cayman when I turn 75. When I found one in Ft Meyers in mid February, my wife said to quit fooling around and just get it. So I got it - drove it back to Athens GA the next day - my 1st Porsche. Your story sounds a bit like mine; and with an indulgent wife, I have had a bunch of toys over the years. This one however, may end up being my favorite, (of course, I've said that about all of them!).
Enjoy - and maybe I'll see you at the "tail"

Congrats!
Congratulations Whippa and welcome to the club. Beautiful car. I did pretty much the same for my 65th last year. Love mine as I'm certain you do as well. Have fun!

Just curious why a 4 year old S with 31k on it is not a CPO.
Don't misunderstand. That's a gorgeous car and sounds like it runs great.
