Default How well does the 07 Cayman S handle snow/ice?

I have all season tires and am considering a 2 hour drive through twisty mountain roads. I'd wait for a clear day, but the weather can change quickly and I read that the 07 Cayman S has an open differential so I'm concerned about one of the wheels spinning if I hit an ice patch.

I'm driving on roads that are generally well maintained, but reading about the open differential makes me a little nervous. Would the PSM help if one of the wheels doesn't have traction?

PSM helps tons. I use Pirelli SottoZeros and I have next to no trouble on ice or snow. I don't know about the all seasons. I got caught out a few miles from home on summer tires in a couple inches of fresh powder and ice. It was horrifying. That night I ordered my winter tires.

my 09 does not have winter tires on it...it goes no where in the snow/ice.

Winter tires and you will always find enough traction. Limited slip diff is of course more fun

How exactly does the PSM work? I enjoy driving the car and having fun with it as much (if not more) than most, but if I end up driving back at night in a snowstorm I'm a little nervous

PSM cuts power when it senses wheel spin.

I have a set of all-seasons (Continental DWS) on my spare set of wheels. It'll handle the occasional bit of snow or ice, but I wouldn't chance it on anything serious. If it's real snow, you'll want actual snow tires. If it's just a chance of occasional patches, don't worry about it.

Thanks everyone. I drove it yesterday in clear conditions through the mountains and it's an incredible car, especially above 5k rpm. If it looks like heavy snow I'll stick with the boring, but safe for the snow SUV
