Default Thinking of building a Cayman "DE" car for me and the wife. What needs done?

As the title says........Thinking of building a Cayman "DE" car for me and the wife. What needs done? It will be an early (think $20K or less donor car) model year with manual tranny.

Not building a race car. Done that many times over. Not again.

Just want a car that I can drive to the track (VIR is 1 hour from my home) and my wife and I can enjoy it. I know it's not a GT3 but my GT3 only needed toe arms, locking plates, and safety bits (seats, harnesses, roll bar) to have fun with on track as my days of trying to win the DE are long gone.

Anything that just NEEDS to be done for the car to be track worthy so I don't run into oiling issues, cooling issues, etc???

I've DE'd the GT3 a few times but I just can't justify tracking that car anymore as I have over 100K in that car and it's just worth way too much now that would become worthless if it was ever damaged.

You will want a gearbox cooler, and doubly so if you decide you want to run an LSD. Because of the midengine design, the oil sloshes away from the ring and pinion. We've seen them getting really hot on the track, even in a 30 minute session.

I know, I know Ken. Why can't I just leave well enough alone?

987.1 cars have oiling issues when tracked, consider a oil pan upgrade. If you plan on running slicks then get an accusump. Also, the AOS is a known weak point on these cars.

What about running an entry level tire like the Nitto NT01?

I would suggest an accusump if you plan on any non-street compound. You might want to spend some time over on planet9, a lot of info on track mods for a reliable 987.1 .

Just built a DE car.. Here's the list.. (about 30k in mods @ my cost plus car) Yes some of it is overkill but coming from a 997.2 GT3 this is pretty much as close as I could get.. If I had it to do again.. I would just go lease a CPO 14 Cayman R 24 month term. Cost about 24k for 2 years and anything breaks send it back to the dealer.. At the end back to the dealer no worries about selling etc..

Find a Cayman R or a DFI Cayman S.
