Thanks Tasman! Without speaking out of place, if you want to speak to us or call, feel free; visit our website or call with questions. January is opening up and we have been lucky enough to have built nearly 15 987.2 cars as race cars or 3.8L conversions and over half a dozen 3.8L 981 projects. We spent a decade racing these cars and are more than happy just staying home and building them!

I am just a hack DE driver. On my Cayman R I got gt3 LCAs in front and tarret toe arms in rear for mild -2 deg camber. OZ alleggerita 18in wheels + yoko AD08Rs so I can drive to/from track. For safety have the Hergesheimer roll bar, Schroth harnesses. As others say for 1st gen Cayman some oiling improvements may be needed.

Since your budget is less than $20k for a donor car, you need to focus on a Gen I car. I have amended the list below to identify the essentials and nice to have items:

THRID RADIATOR KIT (not necessarily essential if you remove one of the cooling fans on one side. This provides for better cooling flow at speed)

Added Essentials:

GT3 FRONT BRAKE DUCT SPOILERS (only $25/side)
UNDERDRIVE PULLEY
POWER STEERING COOLER

I would add to the essentials list either front camber plates or GT3 control arms or else you will be burning up front tires pretty quick.

I would recommend starting with a 987.2 car as there are many who have blown up pre-2009 cars.

3 main Gen 1 problems on track:

1) Oiling. Many approaches in attempts at solving this. Gen 2 is clearly superior.
2) Oil ingestion. Need Motorsport AOS if you'll be pulling high G's.
3) PS cooling. Gen 1's have PS pump failures due to PS overheating then fluid leaking then pump failure when fluid is emptied. Need PS cooler.

Gen 2 solved all these problems. If you can stretch the budget, just buy a Gen 2 (987.2). 9A1 is a great street/track engine. Honestly, Mezger GT3 engines have had more problems than 9A1 with their bolts backing out, etc. In other words, more Mezgers have blown up than 9A1 in the last, say, 5 years. That says something.

Oh, and you definitely want LCAs in the front to get more negative camber for tire saving and better turn-in. Options are GT3 (also need trailing arms), RSS, and Elephant Racing.

The idea of leasing a car for $24k for 24months seems like a logical one. You have a fixed cost, minimize the risk, don't worry an depreciation..: maybe I'm missing something but... That would be how I would go

Mark's car sounds like a great option.
