Cayman S Over Revs - Buy or Walk?
Hello Brain Trust,
I'm new to the boards and have my first serious conundrum regarding a purchase of a 2011 Cayman S. The seller is a friend of mine and has full dealer service records and has tracked the car ~15-20 HPDE days. Car has 27,300 miles and 593 hours.
We have a deal predicated on the Porsche Dealership PPI report. I just the received the results back and the BIG concern is on the over revs. They look like this:
Range............Ignitions.............Hours...... .........Time (seconds)
1.................50,979.................... 530................ 136
2...................2627......................495. ............... 7
3....................60.........................43 2............... .15
4...................209........................432 ............... .5
5...................170........................432 ............... .35
6....................0............................ .0................ 0
I think I calculated the time correctly, but chime in if you spot an error.
The guys in the service dept. say not to worry because the range 4 & 5 were long ago and the time was very short. This seems to be in direct conflict with the over rev charts I have seen.
Any advise here? My gut tells me to walk.
Thanks in advance,
Randy

It depends. Looks like one missed shift at 432 operating hours. As you state, that was about 100 hours ago, so it should not be an issue. Any serious problem would have manifested by now. All the range 1 ignitions show the car was driven hard and bumped off the rev limiter daily.
However, if there is remaining factory warranty, they would likely not cover an engine problem. If the warranty is expired, then not an issue. I believe this report will prevent a CPO warranty if that was a consideration.
If the prior owner is a friend, I may pass. If you should have an issue, it could affect the friendship. Plus, there are plenty of choices out there. Unless this one has every option you want.

The seller is a friend and is offering the car only to me. We have a set price (roughly the wholesale price) and if I don't do the deal he will keep the car as a DD (and track his GT3).
My highest priority from the start has been to not damage the friendship and I'm confident we both understand that. That being said, I wonder that if the motor blows, one of us may end up extremely pissed.

Is it a 6sp or PDK?

That's a ton of over revs. For the right price, maybe. I'd rather spend a few thousand more and buy a less abused/used car.
