My '14 Cayman S listed for just over US$101,000. Not crazy, just bought what I wanted. Best handling cage I have ever had as a DD. Do not rely on other's opinions. Drive examples of each and decide for yourself which ticks the most necessary boxes.

When I bought my new 2005 997 Carrera I thought I'd never sell it so didn't mind paying for extra options. Nearly a decade later I was stunned how expensive it was to keep it as a daily driver. Every little problem was at least a 1k fix and after the last 5k fix I decided I needed to move on (not mention that the mechanic told me the seals were dry & cracked and would soon be another expensive fix). I put it on the market for 1k less than blue book value and not a single nibble (even here in Silicon Valley). So I dropped the price more and got a few calls but had a car fax hit for a minor bumper hit that made people feel I should drop the price significantly. Finally a dealership offered me a reasonable trading value for a new Cayman. This time I decided to try a lease so I don't have to worry about long term cost of ownership, resale value or car fax. So far my happy with the decision, but won't really know till the lease runs out in 4 years.

I owned both a 993 Ruf BTR and a Cayman, so I can speak from both perspectives.

If you drive the cars (meaning put miles on it.) like I do: 138k miles on the Ruf, 85k miles on the Cayman, then the value will tank seriously. Thus the higher the go in cost the more you will lose, at least on paper. As such I thought VERY carefully what option I would want on my cars. I bough the Ruf used so I could only do upgrades, no factory options to speak of. I spent a lot of money on the Ruf and none of those reflects on the value because of the miles on the car.

I bought a stripped Cayman as I wanted the lightest Cayman available. In addition, I know the more options (except for leather interior) the more stuff to repair after the car is out of warranty. Since I bought the car to drive, and I really do not need Sports Chrono, ceramic brakes etc. to really enjoy it on the road, I bought a base car. I only put a short shifter in as that was well worth the price to me. Now that I have the car for 7+ years and 85 k miles on it, I cannot be happier with my decisions. The car will be worth a pittance now when I sell it. It probably will be similar value if it is a loaded car. The high miles will mask the options. In the mean time, I did not enjoy the car any less because it is an awesome driving car, fully optioned or not.

Just got a 14 Cayman S with a few options worked out to be 80K with tax so I am sure with a few more options 93k is not that far away. I personally like it more than the 911.

What did the OP end up getting? Curious?

Anyway just traded my 09 C4S for a 14 Cayman S and its one of the best P-cars I've had so far. And I've had 4 Carreras, a 987 Boxster and a Cayenne so I am familiar with the brand. Lots of good advice already. Stay away from costly or "show me" options and you'll have a hell of a car. And for $93k...I'd say consider the Cayman GTS...you'll definitely have one hell of a driver's car and something a little more special that will hold a little more value over the regular Caymans there too.

I faced the same dilemma. I went to buy a Cayman GTS and ended up buying a 911 C2S. To keep the cost reasonable (although I admit I spend EUR 25k more than the what the Cayman would have cost), I kept the options on the 911 to a minimum and selected those ones that imo define what Porsche is about: Sport Chrono, Sport Exhaust, PDK, and a few other minor items. The only significant amount I spend on cosmetic options was the GT silver colour. I'm still waiting for delivery of my new car but I extremely happy with my build and glad I went for the 911 and not the Cayman. Nevertheless, the Cayman is a great looking car but I just feel more emotionally drawn towards the 911. Also, it will be my daily driver and I feel the 911 is more suitable for that than the Cayman.

I currently drive the 991 S on a daily basis and I'll be switching to a 981.2 when the lease is up.

The 991 is an awesome driving car, but I feel it's dimensions have grown too large for me.

I believe that the Cayman/Boxster are the purest sports cars that Porsche currently offers and I can't wait to see the new GT4.

Also, with Porsche, less is more. I'd keep the options list to the bare minimum.

As for the 4 cylinder, I already have a turbo charged version of that, and with the current set up, is at around 350 with 18 psi of boost.
I love my current car, but if a 6 cylinder turbo came out of Porsche, in a Cayman, that would be a real game changer....

I have a distinct feeling that this prediction that Porsche would go with a 3.8 turbocharged 6 ( in the first article) is nothing more that sheer fantasy ... I would jump through hoops for that but I can see them doing that to their base 911 ....

Just brought my 2014 Cayman S on Sunday (July 6th). Rhodium Silver, 6MT, full leather, X73 suspension, Sport wheel, 20" wheels and NAVI/BOSE sound.

MSRP was $77.5K, but got it for $70K. Best deal I have ever gotten on any new Porsche.
