Default Servotronic mod- way better steering!

It has been posted here before, but I thought I'd post again for those that missed it. If you are a 911 enthusiast and find the Cayenne's steering to be a bit vague and soft, simply pull the 5A fuse for the Servotronic. It leaves the power assist portion of the steering intact but gives the Cayenne's steering much more feeling and closer to 911-like.

I did this with my 2008 CTT and immediately when I got my 2009 CTTS a couple of weeks ago. It really is a great improvement.

As always, perform any modifications at your own risk.

Cheers,
TomF

Thanks, Tom.

Might try it, but it seems like it might be a long way to go before the Cayenne feels anything like my 911.

I swear I could run over a quarter on my garage floor with my GT3 and feel it in the steering wheel. Hell, I might even be able to even be able to tell you if it's heads or tails.

Last week I ran over a soda can in the Cayenne and I didn't even notice it!

Well a GT3 isn't exactly your typical 911

I'll take not feeling like a 911 for the easy of moving around at low speeds and parking. I have a 911 to feel like a 911, but compared to any other SUV the P!g's steering is very 911-esque in my opinion.

Excellent comments! After 5 911s and 30 years of ownership, I certainly recognize that nothing is going to come close to the feel of a 911's steering. On the other hand, pulling the fuse sure makes the steering feel a lot better than the vague ambiguity of the full servotronic. Remember, by pulling the fuse, the power steering stays intact, and the next layer (the Servotronic) that gets removed from the equation.

Take five minutes and try it- you may be surprised!

Cheers,
TomF

I second the fuse pull. Try it

My 08 GTS has the 1N3 Variable Assist Power Steering listed as an option. I assume this is the same as Servotronic? If so I thought it only added boost at low speeds? Does it also add boost at highway speeds?

Where is that fuse located and what number is if?

May give it a try when I get the car back from the widebody conversion.

Check your owner's manual as the fuse locations vary from model to model and year to year.

It adds boost whenever it is needed. That's what leads to the really vague and inconsistent feeling in the steering. In certain situations, with it disabled, a little more force is required, but it's very little. IMHO, the feeling and feedback is vastly improved over with Servotronic enabled.

Just gave this a try. Love it! Word of caution though, the steering is MUCH heavier at super low speed than with Servotronic active (at least, it is in my case, YMMV.) So, if you do a lot of crawling speed driving and have to maneuver frequently while doing so, this might not be for you.

However, for me, the vast improvement in steering feel at normal and highway speeds far outweighs the slightly "hampered" steering at very low speed.

Just my two cents...for the penny their worth.

Glad you like it. It really is a vast improvement if you want more feeling through the steering wheel.

I almost bought a new steering rack until today when I read this thread and took 30 seconds to remove the Servotronic fuse. Cayenne drives like a completely new Cayenne! Not sure if something is actually wrong with my Servotronic motor but I couldn’t feel the road at all and now the problem is solved. Thank you for creating this thread.

Glad you like the improvement. My wife thinks the steering is too hard with the fuse removed, but she is used to driving a Toyota... I prefer the feedback and feel from the road that the elimination of the Servotronic provides. Certainly not 911 level, but much better.

That’s strange that she doesn’t like it. I’ll let my wife drive it and see what she thinks. For me it’s not any harder to maneuver, I can just actually steer with accuracy for once.
