Default Grinding noise, loss of reverse motion, loss of ps

My son was out in our '06 CS Ti and told me (via text late) that when he moved it once in reverse that he lost reverse power and power steering and heard a grinding noise. He shut it off then restarted it and it was ok. I haven't had a chance to look at, but thought I'd ask here for suggestions of what to look for. I plan on checking the basics, trans fluid, belt, etc. But this sounds odd.

Update: my son says it was drifting forward (I assume a slight grade) and when he gave it gas there was no response. Tried putting it in park then drive - same thing. Restart all was ok. Still baffled by the no ps unless the engine wasn't actually running and he thought it was.

I would have to imagine that the engine wasn't running.

After further discussion it sounds like it stalled. No clue why. I did just replace the coils and plugs so... Guess we'll see if it recurs.

For no power steering, the engine would have to have stalled or the belt came off (assuming hydraulic PS and not electric).

Sounds like he did the ol' put the transmission in reverse/drive while the car is still slightly moving in the wrong direction. This would present the exact symptoms you describe, perhaps being on the hill, darkness, and unfamiliar with the car he may not have realized he was still rolling a bit.

Pretty sure at this point that it stalled. It's been running fine since.
