Educate yourself on the aluminum cam chain tensioner bolts in the 11s and some early 12s.

Are you sure this affected '12s? I thought it did not.

To my knowledge, there are early 12s affected as well. Once you know what do look for, any car you're checking out, you can perform a quick visual inspection on and then make that part of your negotiation. This obviously doesn't work well if buying long-distance until you get there for the PPI.

Petza, I have a June 2012 build CTT. How & where do I look to identify if they are aluminum cam chain tensioner bolts?

TIA,
=Steve

Steve, my '09 doesn't have this issue so I haven't captured (bookmarked) the threads that include the details, but if you do a search here or on 6speed someone has provided some very good photos of the differences and the procedure to checking them - I believe it may be as simple as removing the oil fill cap and shining a light down in there to see them.

Sorry I couldn't link you directly there, but once you locate it, post it up here for others to find it easier.

Pete - that someone is me.

http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/c...s-failure.html

Go to the end of the thread. The photos are right there. Takes 60 seconds to check. Take a dental mirror with you.

And there are reports of some early '12's - produced in 2011 - having the bolts. Have I seen them? Nope - but it's certainly possible depending on when the Variocam manufacturer switched back to steel. Early 2012's are sold in the US as early as August or September of 2011.. I don't think a June 2012 production CTT has anything to be concerned about.

If it doesn't *have* to be a 958... I have a line on a local (Chicago area) all original 2004 Turbo with literally 2500 miles on it...

Thanks to Pete & Don (above). I finally checked mine & do not have aluminum.

So for thread reference: I have a 2012 958 CTT that was built in late June 2012.

It does not have the aluminum cam chain tensioner bolts.

Good point, but if you're going to mention the 'WC-22' issue, you might as well tell the OP about the transfer case issue too which encompasses not only the '11 & '12 models, but all of the 958 series years ('11-'17).

From what I'm seeing online and hearing from the two dealers in my area, they're seeing a boatload of the transfer case replacements. To the point where my SA recently talking with one of the regional managers asked "BTW, what's going on with all these transfer cases?!" I'm not aware of the response he received.
