I'm thinking it's more likely used in the manufacturing process. More likely something a robot grabbed onto during automated welding or something. Either way, there's zero risk in removing it.

not sure. if you can provide me an inside look, i will evaluate...
if the principle to bridge the chambers can be accommodated, i guess it will work.

don't know about diameters etc...

looks like the tips will be harder to align afterwards with this connection...

Here is how it sounds after the mod, the car is 100% stock with zero mods apart from a length of tube in either end of the silencer as per mod in the OP.

Just did that mod as well....sounds just as sweet as yours in the vid....surprisingly, in the cabin its not that noticeable.

A few notes: '04 CTT
1. Mine was 15 mm rather than 16mm
2. I used hacksaw blade....no idea how you guys used a dremel to get in there unless you had a long extension?
3. I vacuumed out the metal shavings before reinstalling the tail-pipes.
4. Observation....the 18 inches seems sufficient to cover the perforated area of the middle muffler, but it seems like the metal insert could possibly get pushed back out towards the tail-pipes after a while which could expose some of the perforated area at some point in time. Not a big deal....just an observation from doing the mod.

The four point above were exactly like me then !!

What I did was cut four slots in the end of the tube like an X, i then just fractionally clamped the end closed so it formed a very small taper. This allowed me to gently tap the pipe into the perforated tube rather than relying on it staying in place.

My tips were a pig to get off though.. around 30 min per side of bashing twisting, penetration oil etc. Agreed the noise increase inside the car is minimal, but outside sounds like a BEAST

I tried to flare mine a bit, but will probably go back in and 'cut and flare' as you did. I'll wait a while just as a test to see if they push out much as they are.
I agree on the tips.......even with some wd-40, they were snug for sure. Thanks for posting your vid....it was the final nudge i needed....

Another note: I had no trouble getting the insert side past the perforation area (did not even have to taper it in). I would be inclined to try 2" pipes (for tighter fit and less bypass into muffler) once i open them up again.

Would this be doable on a 2008 CS? I looked at the exhaust on ours and there is a slight bend where the tips connect to the exhaust muffler. Plus, it looks like I will have to remove the rear bumper.

Just did this today on my UK spec 04 CTT, wow..thats how they should sound

I had the stupid little pipe in the way on both sides of mine but 10 min with a hacksaw blade soon got rid of those. I just used 450mm length of 54mm OD stainless and cut an X in the end so i could tap it into the taper.

Easy DIY job and superb sound now.

Fastbikes where did you get your pipe from? Where in the UK are you?

Im in Tenterden, Kent.

I popped down to an exhaust fabricators who usually do odds and ends for me, they sold me two pieces for £20.

However two of these will do the job..you may need to trim them a little

I found i had to cut an 'X' into the end to form a taper and give it a fairly firm tap in with a hammer to stop it rattling loose. All becomes clear when doing it.

I'm interested to see how this mod could be done to a 957 too. Anybody know, or done it?

If your muffler looks like this one

it seems like it may work....not sure of the diameter of where the exhaust tips mount but the flex tube that I used seemed like it would flex around the slight bends of the PICS shown on the muffler shown above.

Flex tube

I mean the tube is only 8 bucks..might as well give it a shot.
