Default Screen between gauges failing, 2005 Cayenne

(I searched & was surprised not to find anything on this)

My dealer tells me that I'm not the only one having this problem. The small digital display screen located in the center of the gauge cluster is failing in my 2005 Cayenne S.

It started by getting dim around the edges when extremely hot, and has gradually gotten worse to the point where it's now almost entirely gone.

The dealer told me that this screen is part of the entire gauge cluster and isn't sold seperately. He also told me that I could not install a junkyard cluster, because this is a "coded" part that contains the vehicle's recoreded mileage, etc. A new gauge cluster could be installed, but the cost is around $2,500.

It seems like the right (smart) person could replace only the worn out screen within the gauge cluster. I'm sure Porsche doesn't sell this part seperately, so sourcing it would be a challenge.

I'm really hoping that this forum has already found a solution to this problem. Anyone???
