Default Buying used 2004 turbo, what to look out for?

New to Porsche and new to this forum.

I'm looking at a two used 2004 turbo's and was wondering what I should be looking out for in particular.
  1. Are there any known problems with these cars?
  2. Any TSB's that must have been fixed?
  3. Any special inspections I should do?
  4. Any SW tools to read out from the ECU?

One is 107k miles for $21k, other is 66k miles for $27k.

Any input appreciated, thanks.

Search this forum for: cardan shaft, ignition coils, coolant pipes, water pump and fuel pump. You should also find good reading material by searching for: brakes, transmission and suspension bushings. That should give you a good start. Get a pre-purchase inspection from a qualified Porsche mechanic with Cayenne experience. Look for a car with maintenance records.

Have extra cash, and quite a bit of it that your willing to spend if **** hits the fan.

Dennis covered it in his list. If the pipes have been replaced, see if you can find out if they blew or if it was precautionary. If they blew hidden repair costs could include torque converter seal and a starter.

Get whatever one you can afford that includes a warranty, coming from a former 04 Turbo owner.

Good luck, its an amazing machine.

Is there a way to inspect the car to see if the coolant pipes have been replaced?

An '04 with 107K should be under $20k unless it has a bunch of stuff done allready.

Mudman, are you saying, don't get 04, get 08? If so what is the main driver for this, seeing that the price will get to $50k instead of $25k.

Also, is there a SW diagnostics tool for Porsche like VAG-COM/VCDS for VW at a reasonable price?

A Durametric tool can provide some basic diagnostics, and is much, much less expensive.

At the risk of putting words in Mudman's mouth, he is (very concisely) saying you should get the newest Cayenne that your pocketbook will allow. You can find this info all throughout the forum, but in summary:

'03 = alpha test version...lots of major bugs
'04 = beta test....better, but still has major bugs
'05 = almost done testing...minor bugs remain
'06 = bugs fixed, but still looks like an '03
'08 = bugs fixed and refreshed front end

fwiw, I just purchased (having received excellent advice on this forum) a 2004 Cayenne Turbo with 150K miles from the original owner with complete maintenance logs from new, and a PPI from my trusted mechanic verifying that all updates were performed, for $17,500. My rationale for the purchase was that with all the updates and current maintenance, it's essentially equivalent to a newer model, even with the higher mileage.

Without the updates and the maintenance history, I don't think I would have paid more than $14K.

Even so, I am trying to psychologically prepare myself for the unexpected but inevitable kick in the nuts that owning a car you love provides.

It's funny everyone seems to like the facelift better. I think the face lifted front looks no better just different.

But on a more important note.. When did pdcc get added?

OP - try to get an 05 if you can.

Default enjoy !

You may want to check out Excellence Magazine's December 2010 issue,
page 131 on earlier Cayenne problem issues, so that you can keep an eye out.

Regardless, sounds like you will be enjoying it, and I can't imagine
that you could have such a good ride and enjoyment for less.

so for

I have seen: -- lets say for the sake of argument all 04/05/06/06S have the coolant pipes fixed.

Note ALL Twin Turbos:
04 60K miles <$20K
05 60K miles ~$25K
06 60K miles ~$30K
06S 60K miles ~$35K
08 60K miles ~$42K

I can afford anyone of them. I can wrench. This will be a DD with at least one
back up car.

How do I justify the extra $$ for the newer years for the same mileage?
Is an 08 > 2x the value of an 04 with the same mileage? $20K goes along ways....

thx,

Mike
