Default Slight shake/rumble at cold start idle

I just recently picked up a 2009 Cayenne (base v6). It currently only has 15k miles. I noticed a slight shaking/rumble at idle on a cold start. I also noticed this here and there stopped at a stoplight. Is this normal for these engines?

It's a very slight shake, more like a rumble, doesn't appear to be a rough idle and I didn't notice any fluctuations in rpms.

Any ideas? Thanks!

I recently picked up a 2008 base Cayenne with 23k miles and noticed the rumble at start up. Didn't notice it so much when stopped. I would also be interested in hearing why this happens.

Since your cayenne is still under factory warranty it wouldn't hurt to have this checked by your local dealer.

Had the same problem on my 04 S. Dealer diagnosed a vacume leak. Runs like a champ.

Did you ever figure it out? What did the dealer say. I have the same issue. The shop foreman said it was normal. No codes. Just wondering if they are right or if I should press the issue more.

FWIW, mine had a similar problem too. If the P!G sat for a while (few hours), upon start up it would shake a bit and crank a bit longer as well.

Dealer found a recall on the fuel pumps and replaced it under warranty. You may want to see if this recall applies to your vehicle as well.

What year is yours? V6, S, Turbo? Did it stop once the fuel pumps were replaced?

08 CS. Yes. After the pump was replaced, the P!G starts quickly and idles smoothly as well.

I never looked into it since I believe another member mentioned it was normal. I only felt it on cold startups but it would go away once warmed up. I didn't know about the fuel pump recall, maybe I'll check that out the next time I'm there as well. Haven't noticed it getting worse or anything either since I first posted this.

2006 Base. In the shop now. They say it is the high pressure fuel pump that warms up the cats it so it makes it shake. So it is normal according to them. They have had it there for 2 days.

My '06 base model was at the dealer last week for the same problem and diagnosis (normal for cat warm-up). Now it stalls which it didn't do before. On the last cold start it chugged, jumped and rocked for a full minute before stalling. It didn't sound very healthy at all but it started ok right after this happened. Temperature was -5 C but that is normal winter weather here and 3rd winter I've owned it. Using 94 grade fuel and tank was about half full. It was in the shop 6 months (10,000 km) ago for the same issue which seemed to go away after an oil change. No warning lights on the display. The most recent issue progressed from happending about 20% of the cold starts and now it is more like 95%.

Fuel tank vent valve? Crank position sensor? Do fuel additives help or is that a bad idea?

barrio35...has your issue gotten worse or is it stalling?

The issue is the same. With the temp dropping now it occurs more often. We have never stalled though. What we do is take off now and not let it idle. The shop guy said no harm? I have always let my cars warm up but whatever. It takes off in D1 but I manually shift to D2. I hate how it shakes. I have always that it is not right how that was designed. They said that it is normal so gave up on the issue. Let us know what you find.

Hi I'm new to this forum,

I was googling this issue as I'm currently having the same problem with my 2005 Cayenne 3.2 V6 (48500 miles)

When starting the car from cold I too feel the rough running and the rev counter moving from 0.5 to 0.9 and a slight rumble from the engine. When driving off the car sets off in 1st gear also instead of 2nd like normal.

Did anyone ever find a problem with this or is it genuinely the way the vehicle starts up in the cold!?

Cheers

Mike
