Default strange grinding noise during startup

hey guys, got a 2004 Cayenne S. There's a noise like gears grinding. here's the scenario

1) brake on, lightly
2) key start
3) release brake after a second
4) gear grinding noise from front of engine

the noise does NOT happen when:

1) brake on, all the way down
2) key start
3) wait about 5 seconds
4) release brake

anyone have any ideas???? thanks in advance.

gears grinding or a "screeching"? the screeching noise i had was intermittent and was the armature of the starter malfunctioning after being contaminated with coolant from the faulty pipes.

thanks man, that's what i had surmised as well... but any ideas why holding down the brake pedal longer does not make the grinding come about?

How much work to replace starter? mine has been doing the grinding noise when at cold startups ever since the pipes went.

thats why you replace the starter "while your in there" especially if the pipes went and covered the starter in coolant.

They didn't nor did they recommend it, so now I now my pig sounds like one when starting it.
