Default NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation

I have been a frequent visitor to this site to track the various problems reported regarding the Cayenne and other vehicles:

http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/home.cfm

I searched Rennlist, and this topic does not seem to have come up in any past threads that I can find. Let me tell you, the site is very interesting. It provides a full searchable database containing all:

a. Technical service bulletins (TSBs);
b. Recalls;
c. Defect Investigations;
d. Consumer Complaints;
etc. by vehicle make, model, and year.

One of my favorite features is the database of current TSBs. It may not be up to the minute, but it allows one to puruse what seems to be a fairly comprehensive list that your friendly neighborhood Porsche techs are likely to be looking at when you, for instance, bring your Cayenne in complaining about that nagging wheel vibration issue (see TSBs #0501 and 0419).

Lewis will be pleased to refer to TSB #406 for the Cayenne S....

Make: PORSCHE
Model: CAYENNE S
Year: 2004
Type: PASSENGER CAR
Service Bulletin Number: 406
NHTSA Item Number: 10009761
Summary Description:
DUE TO FAULTY SOFTWARE IN THE TOWBAR SYSTEM CONTROL UNIT, THERE IS THE POSSIBILITY THAT THE WARNING MESSAGE CHECK TRAILER LIGHTING IN THE IC WILL BE ACTIVATED WHEN THE RIGHT DIRECTION INDICATOR LIGHT IS SWITCHED ON WITH SIMULTANEOUS BRAKING FOR AT LEAST 3 SECONDS WHEN TOWING A TRAILER. *TT

Anyway, all sorts of fun stuff like this to amuse the Cayenne faithful. Has anyone else visited this site. Any other reactions? How comprehensive do you feel the list of TSBs really is?

As always, thank you for thinking of me AND "!" towing in the same sentence.
Yes, I've been to this site and can recite W406 from memory.
BTW, it's still not fixed, just as me, skl, JFScheck, AW and others..........

It's a software problem? Lewis, I'm sure you've gone down this road so perhaps you can explain why they don't reflash the control unit with corrected software. I must be missing something.

Yes. I believe it is, based on observations, measurements and research.

Dragged downt this road, bound and gagged behind the Cayenne with PCNA at the wheel.

I can not speak for PCNA, nor do I think I would want to, having been forced to interact with them over the past 6+ months.
After W406, PAG/PCNA declared the "!" issue fixed. Period.
To have an "!" issue with a customer(s) AFTER the 'success' of W406 would bring into question another recall, design/validation work, liability questions, ..... basically $$; and we all know how PCNA/PAG HATES to spend profits on their customers.

No, you're not.

Maybe someday in the future, I'll tell the rest of the story........but not now.
