Many thanks to all for the input.... spent the day 'shopping' via phone, and cannot beat the Tire Rack deals anywhere, at least locally here in Les Bois....

A correction to Wingless's info posted above regarding Nitto tires. I have Nitto TerraGrapplers in the 255/55 R18 size for my 18" wheels. They are not rated to Cayenne top speeds so I stay under 130 mph .
As Wingless says they are not true winter tires but rated by the manfacturer as mud and snow. This dual use is good for me because I occasionally go off road in the desert as well as skiing in the Sierra Nevada. I have driven them in a heavy Sierra blizzard and they are very capable in snow most icing conditions. During that weekend I slipped once on sheet ice, and this is where true winter tires *might* have shown their superiority.
