Unhappy "Emission Control" warning light

Today I've had the "emission control" warning light come on for the third time (constant, not flashing which would indicate a more severe problem).

Every time it stays on until the service guy resets the control unit's fault memory. It's annoying. According to the fault memory, it's a problem with the catalysators. However, it seems to be more of a software problem since the cats are working just fine (according to the service guy) and the control unit displays that the fault occurred at 60'000 km although I have driven just about 30'000 km.

I hope that the upcoming software update will cure that....

Does anyone else have/had the same problem?

Sounds to me like it could be a faulty oxygen sensor. That would tell the computer there is a problem with a catalyst. Since they claim the cats are fine, likely an O2 sensor.

I agree sounds like an O2 sensor has failed or become disconnected, most unlikely that the cat has failed so early.

I don't have the technical knowledge to disagreed but couldn't it be that the obviously wrong odometer reading indicate that there's simply a software bug (e.g. communication error in the system)?

Default I have that issue, different solution...

I'm taking my S into the dealer tomorrow to get a "canister" replaced that holds activated charcoal/carbon, that absorbs fumes. Supposedly, when these things go bad, it trips the engine light (which only detects emission problems when solid).

Bring that up to them

Definitely not the O2 sensor since OBD2 diagnostics would have read that error code stored in the fault memory. It is likely to be the seal of the fuel system having a leak (loose gascap!, cracked pipe, bad pressure sensor, etc.). This problem with the emission light staying on afflicts other cars with OBD2 software system installed as per US law.

Unhappy Well, my "fix" seems to have fell through

They replaced the canister on 1/19, and this morning (1/23) the F'n light is back on! This is really annoying, I guess my car that I've had for a month needs to go into the dealer for the 3rd time!

Anyone?

Thanks for the info.

Mine will be at the dealer at the end of next week (1/30). I will let you know what my service rep comes up with (hopefully a final fix).

They replaced the cats! Only time will tell if it was the correct fix.

Matt, I got mine back, after the had it for a WEEK! Told me that it was passing the "short test" and not the "long test", they called PAG and was told to replace some kind of "evaporation pump", not the cats, so time will tell. If you light comes back on let me know, I will do the same....

Default ARRGHH!!! THE LIGHT IS BACK ON!

It's been 7 days exactly since I've gotten the car back, they replaced some sort of evaporation pump per PAG, but to no avail. This is really frustrating!

Matt is yours still ok? I may have to tell them about the cats...

calling dealer this morning to bring it back in

Gig,

Mine is still fine. However, I have been driving a lot since the last visit to the dealer.

I'm on my way to the dealer. Let me ask them for specific details about the parts they did exchange. This way, you can give more specific "orders" to your dealer.
I can post my findings in about 2-3 hours. OK?

Chris,

As promised, I asked my service guy. He said that they replaced
the broadband lambda probe on the second cat on the left side!

I hope you know what I mean with this translation of the german word "Breitband-Lambda-Sonde"

Hope that helps.

Excellent, I mentioned this to my service guy over the phone and he said that the "cats" replacement was an issue in the older Cayennes, but not the new ones. Nevertheless, i will bring this up to him anyway

I'm taking it in on Monday...danke Matt!
