Default Fire suppression system

Guys,

I'm switching to vintage Porsche racing as a safer alternative sport than extreme ski mountaineering (which I do at a moderately high level and would prefer to survive), I'm planning to install a fire suppression system in my 1967 912 racecar. Any pros/cons as to types/brands/etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Rich

people must not know about these around here.
I run an afff system in one race car that has a o2 cartridge for firing it off.
spa makes a great unit which I have in a 57 alfa that is the battery operated one and it is also the same type that comes in the cup cars.

for a good refillable unit I would go for this one

or one like it.
you can also go with a halon version which does not make as much of a mess obviously but needs to be recharged from time to time.

We ran halon on most cars and boats. However I think it's gotten much more difficult to get.

I have the Spa 4 liter AFF electric system with 4 nozzles: driver lower torso/legs; cockpit center; upper engine near carbs; fuel cell. The manual cable-pull version seems a bit more common but either way, they are nice setups. Foam is better for you and the planet than Halon but both are effective.

I've also got the SPA 4 liter system in my race car ... only drawback is that is has to be serviced and recertified every two years !

Cheers

Just a little update on the Spa 4 liter fire suppression system ... it saved my car at Mosport last weekend when the oil filter seal blew out and set the car on fire ,the flames were coming up through the floor before i set off the fire suppression system,i had one of the nozzles directly on the oil filter and headers and that was the key.

I was able to continue my weekend and run a 90 minute enduro ... with a few borrowed parts, but nonetheless my car will live to see another race
Had my bottle refilled and certified yesterday ... good as new !

Cheers
Phil

Phil do you have the mechanical or electrical model?

I saw the electrical one on rick cayman and really like the button instead of the pull wire that i got on mine

What size do we need exactly?

Seb,

I have the mechanical one with the pull cable ... you saw my car at Mosport, could have been a lot worse ... mine is the SpaSense 4 liter system,i saw one getting emptied at Jon Nicols Motorsports,it holds a lot of fire suppressant and the main thing is that it doesn't make a mess or stain you driver's suit !

Cheers

Default Fire suppression for a 951

We are thinking about getting an AFFF system for our 951. Where do you have the lines go through the firewall? Anyone got pictures they could share or advice on installation? I know we want nozzles pointed to the header and oil filter, as well as at both seats. How hard are they to install? If you were to do it again, what would you do differently? It's a track car with a Safety Devices cage and it seems like a system might be the next thing to address.
Thanks for any advice.

the afff system from og racing is a great bang for the buck. Super easy to install on a 944 You can punch through the firewall in many different places and it will come with a special fitting to allow the lines to do so. All push lock connectors. I have my bottle mounted on the floor behind the passenger seat.
