Hi I need help. I have a boxster that I want to put a 996 3600cc engine into the boxster engine is dead but I can buy a 996 Engine direct from Porsche with a power upgade with 361Bhp which could make the car fun . I live in the UK and I don't know anyone that have done it. so the next step is the usa so please please can you help.

Yes you can, but the difficulty depends on model year.

For MY2003 or newer, a 3.6 swap is relatively straightforward, since the car has the same DME as the 3.6 996.

For MY2002 or before, a 996 3.4 would be the same, again since the share the same DME.

I am no expert, but I understand that swapping DME is a major hassle. It practically means rewiring the whole car.

If you have a pre-2000. I believe it is very difficult since it doesn't have eGas.

You may want to check the Porsche Pete Boxster Board for more discussion on this.

Cheers,
Toby

It depends on what year and what engine. It is best to keep common generations of the donor and recipient. An early S can use a 99' Carrera 3.4l. The later cars with e-throttle can use the 3.6l engines. There is a little more than just bolting it together as there is some harness work that also needs to be done. If you search around the web, there is an article that documents the entire swap of a 3.4l into an early Boxster S.

What kind of motor is Porsche going to sell you with 361bhp? Even an X51 equipped 3.6L makes quite a bit less than that.

Friend of mine did that with his 2001(?) Boxster. Had some overheating problems but eventually solved them.
I might be able to put you in touch with him if you like; send me a PM with your email and I will try to get it to him.

Be careful, most of the engines when taken out of a car, without the car been wrecked, have the oil/water mixing problem, a common cause for these engine failing, they will start, and run, but is no joke when you see all the oil at the water mixed and starts to overheating, and your pocket empty of your hard earned $$$$$., cheers, Sonny.

DeMan Motorsport in New York has put 3.4L 996 engines into 97-2000 boxsters 7 times, 3.2 987 boxster S engines into 99 boxsters and 3.8L 997 X51 motors into 987 Boxster S's. Lots of fun doing these swaps and great bang for the buck.

Ruf has transplanted a 3.8 ltr, X-51 package in a boxter. The problem is that it will cost more than what your car is worth..
