Default Need info on 993 rear suspension conversion

Does any one have information regarding a 993 or 996 rear suspension conversion into an older trailing arm style 911. I want to update my race car and I am having a heck of a time finding information or pictures of this conversion. I have tried the search engine but no results. I know it has been done before but I don't know if the outcome was a success. Any help would be appreciated.

If your goal is to increase the spring rate, coil springs are the easier way to go. The 993 rear suspension is mounted on a subframe, as I recall, and I'd expect it would be quite difficult to splice it into an earlier 911. If you don't get any other replies, I can move this to the racing forum.

Bill, If you think it is best to move the thread to the racing forum thats fine.
My goal with this change is to get the better handling of the multilink rear suspension in my race car with out changing cars.

Jwerion,

Kelly Moss does a lot of the older 911 to 993 suspension conversions. Give them a call.
It is not an inexpensive proposition, however.

I converted my '77 911 S chassis to 993 RSR, centerlock in the rear. It's quite a task , but it can be done . The old 911 upper shock mounts are cut away, then the 993 mount are welded in. I can remove my engine and leave the tranny in place. I have pics if you're interested.

Howard I would love some pics of your 993 rear suspension conversion please e-mail them to me at jwerion@aol.com
How did it turn out are you happy you did it?
Did the handling improve significantly and drop your lap times?
Would you do it again given your results, cost, etc.?

Howard ,
Can you post the pics ?
I have been thinking about this conversion .What did you do with the wider rear track ? Wider rear fenders ?How hard was it to fit mounting points for the subframe ?Thanks .

Hi,
Would you think it's a good thing to convert a rear 964 to 993 ? I'm thinking about it for a while now, and since the car is completely dismantled and that I started to work on; well it I was thinking it would be the time for such a transformation.

Is a 993 RS setup really better than a 994 RS one ?

I would accept any pic and info

cheers

I don't know what would be involved in converting a 964 to a 993 but it can't be that much different than converting a trailing arm car. But once you do it there is no going back and it was not cheap. My car is just getting finished and I will post some pics when I have a chance. I tried fitting a 996 rear suspension but it just does not fit in the earlier style tubs so I went with the 993 and it has worked out very well.
