Responsibilities

This individual will be a member of the Internet Systems Services team within the Product Engineering Organization. This team operates Comcast's residential and commercial IP voice messaging systems – the largest IP-based voice messaging system in the world. This job involves the full range of activities necessary to deliver voicemail services on an end-to-end basis, from working with vendors, to developing new systems and network designs, implementing new designs, deploying new systems and software, performing day-to-day systems administration and operations activities, building or integrating reporting, monitoring, and analytics, etc.

Major Duties:

Function as a key member of the team responsible for the day-to-day, 24x7x365 on-call engineering, system administration, and operation of Comcast's IP voice messaging systems.

Provide review and input into the design of new technical features and architectural changes to the Voice messaging system.

Perform Solaris and Red Hat Linux operating system installation, upgrades, patching, tuning, and troubleshooting on 300+ servers.

Perform application software installation, upgrades, and troubleshooting, including Veritas Cluster Server, Oracle, Openwave LDAP directory, SMTP MTA, SIP proxy, Cantata Media Server, etc.

Help maintain EMC SAN.

Help maintain and troubleshoot Cisco switches, F5 SSL accelerators, and Foundry load balancers.

Help develop and implement a capacity model, total cost of ownership model and augmentation plan for the platform.

Participate directly in testing and planning to prepare for system upgrades.

Perform troubleshooting and problem resolution activities with other support teams (e.g. network support, NOC, vendors). Produce Root Cause Analysis findings that focus on recommendations to learn from and avoid problem recurrence.

Maintain productive relationships with peer organizations & vendors.

Requirements





Required Skills/Experience:

At least 5 years of Unix systems administration, performance tuning, and troubleshooting experience in a large-scale (50+ servers), customer-facing environment.

At least 5 years in-depth experience with IP networking (TCP/IP packet analysis, DNS, DHCP, NAT, etc.)

Creation of shell scripts to automate tasks and perform basic data analysis.

Demonstrated ability to stay organized while multi-tasking between several projects, and to adapt to change.

Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills.

Team player with professional work ethic and positive attitude.

Demonstrated ability to produce results with a minimum of day-to-day direction.

Demonstrated interest in continuing to grow professionally and learn new things.


Desired Skills/Experience:

Tools development in Perl, PHP, or similar languages.

Experience operating or designing SQL databases (Oracle, Postgres, MySQL, etc.)

Storage Area Network (SAN) experience (EMC, HDS, Brocade, FCIP, iSCSI, etc.)

Experience managing servers remotely in a distributed environment.

Experience with SIP messaging servers, VOIP, or IP Voicemail systems.

Experience operating and troubleshooting web application servers. XML experience is a plus.

Experience operating and troubleshooting SMTP-based e-mail platforms.


Education:

Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Computer Science or equivalent in work experience and self-study.

Advanced degree is a plus.
