Got an email in response to this post from someone that is on his second replacement. His car was delivered in April 2016. Mine was delivered in March 2016 am I correct that yours was delivered in June of 2016? Do you have any record of the serial numbers of failed trans and the new one?
Dealer replaced the entire gear box and shipped the broken one back to the factory. I now have about 800 miles on the replacement of which approximately 150 miles are on the track. So far so good.

My GT4 that experienced a failure was a May delivery. 3rd gear failed at Mid Ohio earlier this month. Dealer quoting "week of Nov 14th" for replacement transmission. I hope with more robust internals...

Not trying to alarm anybody, and I have not read all of the posts in this thread due to lack of time. I frequent a certain IL dealer in the warm months and happened to see the same white GT4 on a lift with the tranny removed, twice within a month or so. Somebody said, not a dealer employee, that the owner is a track junkie who has destroyed his 3rd gear at least twice If not 3 times. Just thought I would mention this because I didn't see where any of the posts I browsed were from IL.
In my C2S, my manual tranny was replaced under warranty with a factory crate tranny for a destroyed 2nd gear synchro. It was balky and crushed going to 2nd. Sometimes when cold and driving slowly it would not engage or maybe poured out of second, when shifting up from first. It had several thousand miles on it when I bought it CPO, and the dealer replaced it with no questions asked. But I discovered it right away after purchase with no track time on my part.
The one thing that seems common with these tranny replacements is they take 5-6 weeks. That's the bad news. My good news was the dealer provided a new Panamera 4 for my use, the whole time, no questions asked. I was happy knowing I was getting a new crate tranny for free and had a decent car to use in the meantime, altho I would have rather had a Porsche sports car, even a used one.
My conclusion after reading some of these posts, is that there are not a lot of new crate trannys sitting around in the US or in Europe. It seems they build them only as needed. I have no idea if the dealer was required to send mine back or to simply junk it.

FWIW, my trans went out 10/9, brought it to the dealer 10/12 PM (Wed), 10/13 or 14 they sent a video of the problem to Germany, Mon 10/17 I got the call Porsche had approved the transmission warranty, Fri 10/21 it arrived, Mon 10/24 it was installed, Tues 10/25 they did an alignment (to my preferred spex, under warranty) and the car was ready for pick up.
I picked up the car today.
Maybe it was just good luck/karma, maybe the GTS trans is more available than others, but happy there was no major delay.

As I previously posted, my suspicion is that this is a problem with a single part in a batch. The failures seem to confirm this since almost all of them are the 3rd gear synchro teeth breaking and falling off the gear. My best guess would be an issue with heat treat and them being too brittle. As Ruminator has shown, this isn't a GT4 specific problem. This is a 981S gearbox (G81 is what I think they call them now)problem that likely effects cars across all spec levels.
I agree with Mooty's take on it. Drive it. No problem until/unless it fails. I doubt there is any internal data telling Porsche/Getrag where the problem starts and ends.

Scarry things...because my tranny does a weird noise (grinding) from 2nd to 3rd, once in a blue moon.
2400 km and no track use.
April 2015 production.

"Are the transmissions the same?" -- I checked (nemiga.com)
- GT4 981 300 020 22
- Spyder 981 300 020 22
- Boxster 981 300 020 21
- Cayman 981 300 020 21
So, no - GT4 & Spyder do NOT have the same transmission as regular Boxsters and Caymans. One revision number different.
