sorry also never driven a cayman ... is it more prone to oversteer than a 911? I thought not hence the whole "fundamentally better format" debate.

JPH above: For a while I thought it might just be due to the mid-engine setup having a greater tendency to oversteer
Mooty's lack of Exige spins seems to prove it too ... all that GT3 spinning experience learned him good

My only experience with a 911 was a 997 C2S on back roads for about 30 miles, and I didn't push it very hard because I didn't have prior rear-engine experience and it also wasn't my car, so I can't compare the two. It was definitely an interesting sensation, though. The front end felt very light, necessitating a lighter touch on the steering wheel, and when powering out of corners I got the sense that the rear end was absolutely stuck to the ground, but that if I overdid it on the power and did manage to break it loose, I would definitely have to work to catch it. I doubt that's news to anyone with 911 experience, but it was an interesting experience for me.

I haven't felt either of those sensations to the same degree with the GT4, fwiw, but I'm also breaking it in, and considering how much Manifold's opinion of the GT4 changed between his review of someone else's GT4 still being broken in and now his own GT4 after break-in, I wouldn't put too much stock into my impressions at this point.

Given that both cars are the same from the firewall forward and given that the Cayman gets the 911s front suspension on the rear, turned around backwards, Caymans will always rotate faster and leave you waiting on the front end less. You hear terms like "polar moment," etc. but at the end of the day, the Cayman is more apt to rotation than a 911 because they have the same front end with the 911's having a much more advanced rear suspension geometry that leaves the rear end tied down better. One car has 40 years of motorsport R&D behind it while the other is just waking up from a decade of factory racing neglect.

Its a lot easier to catch my Carrara when it wags than my 914. It is both the polar moment and the shotty rear suspension.

i dont know technical terms.
but 911 warns you loudly when it is about to come around. you can fee it and often catch it.
cayman elise tell you go go go.... then whisper, "ok, i am coming.." if you listened, you can fix it. if you didn't, and it goes, you wont be able to catch it.

i think both will spin if you dont listen to the car.
