Hmm, it seems Porsche may have painted themselves into a corner by going turbo and increasing HP so much on the non GT 981's. If they don't go back to the GT4 for a couple of years the 718 will already have received a couple of bumps in horsepower and of course the S and GTS will be around with a bump over the base.
Doesn't seem like there will be a lot of room of an "on paper" increase in HP for the GT4 unless they also go turbo or put the current GT3 motor in it.

I would bet the GT3 motor is too expensive to use in the GT4 even assuming the inevitable price hike as a result of it so far exceeding Porsche's sales expectations. However, the 991 GT3 arrived before the 991 refresh, so the next GT4 might appear before the 718 refresh. If so, the 718S has 350hp, so a theoretical 718 GT4 with the 3.8 X51 motor would still have 85hp over the 718S, which incidentally is the same gap between the GT3 and 991S. The torque would be much closer between the two, but BMW had that issue with the E9x 335i and M3. Still, I don't expect that to happen.

Exactly. The 991 GTS and GT3 are only separated by 45 hp, after all, so even a 718 GTS shouldn't trouble this scenario too much, especially considering the 981 GTS only added 10 hp over the 981 S. But this is all academic in my book since I fully expect the next GT4 to be FI. The era of engines being kept around just for a single car seems to be over except on the very high end like the RS, and by the time the next GT4 rolls around I doubt there will be any parts at all that it could share with any other model in the lineup.

If the next GT4 is NA, My current plan is to use that as an excuse to send mine to BGB and turn it into a 4.0.
If the next GT4 is FI, then I won't have to worry.
... and then I'll STILL probably send it to BGB.

Most certainly the GT4 will also give customers the choice between a manual and PDK or PDK-S. The better gearing in the PDK will make that car even faster even if the 3.8 HP gains are modest.
