Question What do the numbers mean?

I've wanted a 911 for some time now. I've found a '72 911 in my price range. But when I started looking up stuff for the 911 I come up with all different numbers. What do the numbers mean? I know what a 911,912,914,924 and 944 is, but what are the rest of the numbers/body styles? I looked in the FAQ but didnt find what I'm looking for.

Also, is there a chart somewhere about engine swaps and horsepower? I think the engine in the 72 is a 2.2. Is there anything bigger that will fit? It's all foreign to me [pun intended]. Where can I go for answers?

They are all internal designations, a few examples:

951 - 944 turbo
952 - right hand drive 944 turbo
996 - current 911 model
993 - previous 911 model
964 - 911 before 993
965 - 964 turbo
930 - 911 turbo
931 - 924 turbo
928 - 928
986 - Boxster

If you do a search there is a pretty complete list in a previous thread.

It's pretty cool that most things you wonder about can be found by doing a simple search.

wrong actually... its a common mistake, or misnomer, its used because the engine code of the 951 S has 52 in it. a 952 is a right hand drive 951. I learned me some Porsche on this here Rennlist site.
