Default Fall Foliage Cruise, bear mtn, NY

So just as the previous years I am hosting an event in the bear mountain region of NY. Each year I change it up a little bit with different routes and restaurants, this year is no different. I've added a new road that is nothing short of fun and as I speak, being repaved.

Over the last 2 years I've opened the event to more than just porsches, with last year bringing supras, nsx, corvette, bmw, 3000gt and a few nissan Z cars from all across their lineage. I always invite porsche owners as I am an owner and I love the community and mutual respect everyone has.

I will post this in each sub forum but all updates will be posted here

The starting point has changed this year.

Start: park and ride at exit 13 on the palisades parkway. There is gas and food local to the stop and very easy access onto the highway.

From the starting point we head north to exit 15 before heading towards the mountain. Roads for the entire cruise include but not limited too, rt106 W, rt 218, seven lakes drive, goat pass(rt9 I think is the formal name), and rt6 w.

Our first stopping point will be Perkins memorial. It's a scenic overlook with a memorial/tower that you can climb and get great views of the surrounding Valley, and on a clear day, nyc is visible 40 miles southeast. There are port-o-jons on site, lines get long so, just run for em

The second stopping point will be: the marina in Cornwall on Hudson. It will be a quick stop, there are no restrooms at this facility, there is a pizza place right next to the turn to go down to the marina if you need facilities.

After the second stop we follow only a couple roads until we make our final stop for food. We arrive usually around 12:30 for food.

Pertinent information:
October 23rd
8:00 am meet time
8:30 am depart time
Exit 13 park and ride off palisades parkway
Bear mtn bridge, $1.50
Lunch is usually around $20


I suggest 2 way radios with sub channel capabilities allowing better coordination for the event provided anyone gets separated by a traffic light or random car that cuts in. You may wish to bring a passenger for ease of navigation, however, full printed directions will be handed out at the start of the event.

I have only a few rules in place. Respect what others drive, give space for people not everyone drives the same way, no obsurd speeding most of the event takes place within a state Park, there will be hikers and bikers around.

Hope to make it this year...did a run to Roscoe in the DD recently, not the P car...and can visualize all the past runs. Just a 4+ hour drive just for the start location, should consider an overnight local the night before.

Information updated, currently the fb page has 30 signed up and about 130 interested.

I look forward to sseeing returning faces and new ones. Based on forecasts it seems we will be catching the middle of prime color season as well, so photos will be nothing short of stunning

This was taken last year by one of my friends, he always comes, takes great shots and helps me a lot with planning if i fall behind

2 weeks away.

Some of the other cars coming, viper, corvette, camaro/trans am, miata, rx7, nissan z, wrx/sti

Like I mentioned, give each other space, different people have different experience levels and we'll have some fun.

I have a couple people coming that will at times sprint ahead to set up photography/video spots to capture everyone as we pass by.

I am changing the eatery to Warwick winery, this is due to the amount of interest shown nearing 300 people. I do not expect all 300 to show up, probably closer to 50 or 60.

The winery is cash only, $5 dollars to park and again about 20 to eat, depending on what you eat and drink and how much of either one you do.

Normally they have apple picking, but due to a poor growing season they do not which sadly for them means it's slower this year but good for us in that it won't be as packed.

The event end time would still be right around 130 or 2, the roads used will remain the same, I will just have to reorder them so they make it more streamlined.

There will be an additional stop for fuel due to a viper coming that gets around 150 miles per tank, with a full route length coming close to 100 miles, I don't want him or anyone else to get stranded.

I was with the group of cars that got lost during leg one. You know how it goes: Someone misses a turn, and everyone that follows is also done for. I think we missed Arden Valley Road, and went up Rt 293, and kept going and going. Now looking at my Google Timeline, we ended up passing Woodbury Commons and approached West Point. It's my own fault since I had absolutely no general sense of the route or any bearing as to where I was or where I was going. We looped all the way back, but when it looked like the lead car was now heading directly to the last checkpoint in Warwick (probably 3 hours too early), I bailed out and went home.

Now that I can actually enter the route into Google Maps, it looks like a great route. I also now can see how badly off course we got. Now looking at this on my computer at home, It's obvious how we could have corrected and salvaged the drive, but not so easy while driving, and not having seen the route.

In retrospect, if you do this again, consider sharing the route beforehand. Instead, if this route was entered and shared beforehand via Google Maps, it would give lost cars a chance to get rerouted to the next checkpoint. Once you're lost it's hard to drive and figure out where to go, particularly when the checkpoint is only labelled "FIRST STOP" on the paper.

Good lesson for me. Always look over the route visually before driving anywhere with a group.
