$300 asus from best buy when they are on sale works great for data, even with RaceKeeper. When it starts lagging in a few years just buy a new one

True for the older Race-Keeper HE and SE.

Not true for the Race-Keeper HDX2. Need more horsepower and storage for the new 1080p x 2 systems from R-K and VVB.

As I've said before, I think storage is becoming the biggest problem. For guys with multiple cameras in a car and running lots of track time, they will quickly fill up most laptop drives.

And, as you and I have suggested before, an ideal case for external HDD's. Cheap enough and I have one for each track.

I noticed these recently. Not cheap, but solid state and super fast - designed for video production. There are non Raid versions that are a little slower.

Since none of this is mission critical information, would recommend a LaCie Porsche Design 1TB for about a sixth of that SSD price! $90

I have two bus powered externals I use: an old 1 TB Buffalo drive (thunderbolt) and a 2 TB Transcend (thunderbolt) drive that I use for track stuff. The 1 TB drive is where I keep the raw data until I render it or purge it (after I decide there is no value to save it). Adding an external is a lot cheaper and easier than dealing with the internal ones on a laptop.

Once USB-C drives get reasonable, I'll probably pick one up.

(Peter: I'm all smiles as my new MBP has shipped and delivery due 12/1 )

With all the talk of multiple HD video streams (up to 6), was not sure if a single mechanical drive can provide the needed bandwidth. Anyone hit the wall with a USB 3 or TB mechanical HDD?

Hot damn, Tom! Same here! Shipped and available for pickup at my local Apple Store December 2nd!

You know, the Apple Store has a number of seriously good deals on the USB-C external LaCie Porsche Design HDD's, right now.

I just picked up a MacBook Pro (Touch Bar, 15", 2.9GHz, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD, Radeon Pro 460) here at the Waikiki Apple Store.

I love it so far! It is very light and very fast!!

Damn Scott, I didn't think the ones in the store would come in before the pre-orders. Congrats. I'm probably going to do a clean install on this one (and now use migration assistant). Not looking forward to the 2 days it will likely take to do both the Mac and Boot Camp/Windows 10 setup from scratch.

Two additions I'm eyeing up:
The External HDD: https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/exte...-pro-dual/mini
The deals that Peter mentions are pretty unbelievable. Note that 2 of 2 reviews complain the supplied cable was crap.
The 4K monitor available now (only 60 Watt power): http://www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-27U...hd-led-monitor
The "available soon" 5K version with 85 Watts: http://www.apple.com/shop/product/HK...splay?fnode=8a

The power brick that comes with the new MBP 15" is 85 W. The 60 W would probably do the job but it isn't certain. The new MBP can have more than one power source connected, but it will only use one - the one that provides the most power.

I was quite surprised that the Apple Store in Waikiki had the exact config I wanted in Space Grey. Monica told me to go ahead and buy it so I did.

I am going to get the 5K LG display. From what I have read, you need the 85w 5K display to charge the 15" MBP.

I will get a Thunderbolt 3 dock and a 4-bay drive setup for the home base. I liked that mini-hub with the SD card reader and USB 3.0 ports you mentioned. That will be great for the track.

I am thinking about running the AiM software under Parallels. That may not work well so I will certainly try bootcamp as well.

I won't be able to do much until I get home. But I am here having fun so that is not a big deal. You should be setup by the time I try so I will interested to hear how your experience goes.

I'll let you know how the set-up goes. We will have to compare everything at the season opener next year.

I'm most likely to get the 5K as soon as it's available too. Given the price, I think I'll grab one of the Porsche Design 4TB drives for a portable (in stock at the local store according to the web). I already have a 4-drive 8 TB external for Time Machine and a 2-drive 8 TB for file storage that are hanging off my mini server, so I don't need much more space.
